Subject: looking for a job
Whew! just landed here in Toronto for about a week and its kinda hard looking for a job, specially in my field, semiconductor engineering. I also noticed the job and careers newspapers only contain training schools and entry level jobs, why is that? I also need to know what is the best newspaper and on what day does it have the most job classifieds, any ideas please? Most big companies also don´t like walk-ins and they only accept applications via internet. I must have sent my resume and applied to about 200 jobs by now but no answer even one. I even went to a job fair in Kanata, Ottawa last tuesday, burned about 300 dollars by commuting, and I got nothing, squat! They said they would just contact me. I just want to know why is it like this? Is it because I have no Canadian education or work experience? What do you think I should do? Study again? Work in Future Shop? which by the way is way behind in technology products compared to Asian stores.

It will not be easy but the fruits will be sweet. Do not lose hope just because you have no Canadian education nor experience. Do not be affected by the series of negatives that you have already experienced. Just hang in there. It might take time but it will come. Have faith. Broaden your job search to different positions which might be a little lower than your previous ones but who knows one job can lead to another. Just have an open mind about it. You might also consider other cities/provinces with higher need for your experience. If you have the means and resources to take up some courses then this will not be a bad idea.

good luck

it also takes longer than a week for people to get back to you.

80% of the jobs are not advertized, you have to network, and that takes longer than a week.
If you already applied 200 times in a week, thos applications must have not been very well presented, I mean, you have to "customize" your cover letter and possibly the resume too for each position you apply to.
Have you checked if you need to be licensed? because if you do, you might not say you are engineer, and maybe that´s the reason the are not calling you.

Gotta try very hard, and you´ll find it.
Wish you luck

how do you network if you just got there??

btw, i think networking is overrated. the interviews i have coming up were not even from the contact i made here. that was a dead end. what i did was find the email address of the actual project manager/engineer of the department you want to work in. try to avoid HR at all cost. they are pure evil!! you want actual names and email addresses like: firstname.lastname@company.com. once i did this, they responded within a couple of days. the wesbite submissions and HR@company.com applications yielded NOTHING. you have to be slick about it.
