It´s a true horse pucky story - perhaps exaggerated for media impact, perhaps not. There are plenty of cultural reasons upping and moving to BC would not be feasible for this family. And $95 for a couch is plenty for someone earning $1,150. While many make it, don´t forget that there are structural reasons that the Canadian dream like its American counterpart leave some behind.

I still want to know how unskilled, illiterate immigrants compare to Canadian born unskilled illiterates. Of all the people in the statistics - how many are immigrant, how many are sponsored and abandoned, how many are refugees.

After that... we can discuss this intelligently.

What does this lady do during the day? where´s her kids´ child tax benefit? where´s her GST credit? does she know there are shelters? does she know she can get FREE child care for her kids in order to get a day job?, does she know there are a lot of government funded schools where she can upgrade and be say PSW earning 18 an hr? does....
In Canada everybody is equal so those "cultural reasons" should be minor details!
She better get herself moving

Would be useful info. Having done fieldwork amongst a community of recent immigrants, poverty certainly does affect at least some. Doesn´t mean older immigrants (ie the rest of the population) don´t suffer from it too. Just that recent immigrants may be more at risk for obvious structural reasons - they are already the "other".

Rather unrelated as you didn´t use "Canadian born" in the same way but interesting nevertheless - here´s an excerpt from a Robert Fisk article on the use of that term to posit an authentic Canadian identity:

" For a very unpleasant ? albeit initially innocuous ? phrase has now found its way into the papers. The accused 17 ? and, indeed their families and sometimes the country?s entire Muslim community ? are now referred to as ?Canadian-born?. Well, yes, they are Canadian-born. But there?s a subtle difference between this and being described as a ?Canadian? ? as other citizens of this vast country are in every other context. And the implications are obvious; there are now two types of Canadian citizen: The Canadian-born variety (Muslims) and Canadians (the rest)." http://www.robert-fisk.com/

Just read through the original article. See, I work a 45-50 hour week, and still have a bit of time and energy to spare at the end of the day, so I figured.. what the heck! Anyway, I just have a few comments to add.

Let´s talk about the absentee husband. He is okay with abandoning his wife and children to be with his mother, knowing that they´re barely getting by, and not even sleeping in their own beds at night? Did the article address that fundamental issue? And this is Canada´s fault why???

I tip my hat to any single mom. I´ve done it myself, with NO financial support from my child´s father, and I know what it´s like to have to stretch a paycheck. I also know what it´s like to work my ass off. I´ve been doing it since I graduated from school, and haven´t stopped since. I´ve never collected social assistance in my life, but I know many single moms who have and do, and I know the funding and educational programs available in Ontario. Women in Canada don´t NEED men to support them. There are too many opportunities available to them, if they´re bothered to explore them.

Then there´s the issue of being poor and unskilled, and plonking yourself in the middle of the most expensive city in Canada. $850 for a 1-bedroom apartment? I guess if that´s where you choose to live, that´s what you choose to pay for housing. Is she being forced to live in metro Toronto? Just curious.

Everyone´s got a story, and if you distort the facts enough, you might succeed in pulling on some heart strings.
