Well, I finally did it. I drove across at the Champlain, NY border post on Monday morning and landed into Quebec as an immigrant. My landing was a breeze, once into the Canadian side. It took 15 minutes, may be less, including the importation of my car at the same time. Before that I had to wait for the US Customs to find the title to my car so that they can let me export it. They had lost it, so they had to stamp a copy that I brought with my just in case. Typical, I would say.

I already got an apartment, phone, and applied for a SIN and health card. The worst thing in Montreal is parking. Hopefully when I register my car in Quebec I will be able to get one of those resident stickers so that I don´t have to overpay for parking.

My advice is not to import a car at the same time as landing, since there are too many other things to take care of at the beginning and no time to worry about it. Unless you can afford to pay the $12/day or so for one of those paid parking places.

Hi again. It is possible to do both SIN and health card in the same day, but each will take around 2 hours or so. The health card is a problem in your case since you must stay in Quebec for 183 days in the first year in order to stay eligible and also must prove residence in Quebec on the day you apply. For me it´s fine since I am not going back to the US, but for you it will not work.

Congratulations to you both! Anonymous: I read recently that it is actually illegal for a PR card to be sent across the border, so you will definitely want to drive back up to your friend´s and pick it up yourself. I was surprised to read this (we had planned a similar case); it´s not worth taking any chances with that coveted card at this point. Just thought you should know!

Landing in Canada (in reply to: Landed)
Cogratulations and thank you for sharing your experience. We might be landing in Canada at the end of October under the skilled worker visa. My question is, we were going to go to Vancouver first but now we are going to Montreal. I have heard we should not land in Quebec. Can we enter Canada by Ontario and then keep driving and settle down in Montreal? Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks
