Subject: after landing
its been a few weeks since i landed and i´m now living in calgary. its really great here and there´s no way i´m going back home. i´ve talked to employers, other immigrants, other people working in my field and FOR SURE, anyone that comes here without a canadian degree (even US) WILL likely have to go back to school if they want to end up in a professional job. you just have to make up your mind and adapt. i have seen the stories for myself: there are tons of immigrants doing menial jobs BUT..i have also seen even more immigrants in white collar jobs, driving 2006 model cars, suv´s and living in really nice homes in the better part of the city. i´ve seen immigrants working who have no business working (really bad english skills). i´ve seen immigrants who left their countries and good jobs and are starting over again..(i still don´t know why people just throw away that much experience and hard work but i really shouldn´t judge). i´ve gone to workshops, seen career counsellors, visited organizations dedicated to immigrants and they all say the same thing: you have to be willing to start over again, take courses or even change paths altogether. they say that if you keep at it, it will happen for you. its happened for thousands before and it can happen for the immigrants of today if you have the means and if you want it enough.

Thanks for taking the time to post something so positive! That´s awesome that you are loving Calgary and finding so many resources--you are clearly doing your homework and it will no doubt pay off for you. Fantastic! :)

Renat,

well, most of the counsellors i´ve talked to said that US degrees are "ok" but you MAY still have to go back to school depending on your field of study, your experience, etc. remember that everyone´s case is different; we have different backgrounds, career goals, experiences, etc. i´m changing my career direction so i´m going back to school to do a short certification course. having some kind of "canadian" pressence on your resume whether odd job work experience, a canadian reference or a canadian degree or upgrade or certification helps. one advisor i spoke to even said that having odd job experience helps even if it is NOT in your field because it shows that you´ve had some exposure to the canadian work culture/environment and you also get a reference out of it. again, the odd jobs don´t need to last forever as these same immigrant organizations will help you even if you´ve been struggling in the country for as much as 10 years. lots of help out there. good luck to you guys.

Immegration process. (in reply to: after landing)
I have 5 years of IT experience and at present I am in USA and working as a SWE. For skilled immigration is it okay to file the PR application on my own is it advisable to go through any agency. Please advise.

Also how is it in Canada for software jobs, would appreciate if any one advises. Thanks.
