Subject: Landed!
  Hi All,

Landed at Sault Ste. Marie (by car) about a week ago and everything was very smooth. Immigration took took our COPRs, stamped our passports, stapled a copy of our COPRs in our passports, wrote "permanent resident" under the stamp, and took our temporary address (friend´s) to send PR Card.

Next was Customs, where we submitted our Goods to Follow list (all to follow including car). Customs said there is no time limit on goods to follow. (The one year time limit rumor is a myth.) They stamped all pages of both goods lists, kept one, and gave us the other. As we slowly move our goods to Canada, Customs will then check them off on their list item-by-item at the border.

Finally, found out something of note. Even though you may have "landed" and have permanent resident status, it doesn´t mean you can immediately appy for an SIN Card. About 5 days after landing, we went to the Human Resources Center to apply for SIN Cards. We showed them our visas, passport stamps, and COPR copies. They said fine, checked the computer, and told us we´re not in their database yet for SIN Card purposes. They said try in a week, but that it could take up to 30 days before the information gets transferred into the Humaan Recources system. So next time we´re in Canada, we´ll try to apply for SIN cards again.

In any event, we´re happy to be Canadian PRs. Wishing all here the same good experiences.

Congratulations! Great to know you had a smooth landing.

About SIN....I think the case is different from city to city or province to province. In Calgary, we were able to get our SIN (number only and a computer print out) on the day that we applied for it...about 3 or 4 days after landing...the SIN card arrived 2 weeks after.

Good luck in your new life in Canada.

Congrats! Richard, good luck to you. I know you are some of the few us citizens to move to Canada, what are your plans ? do you have a job lined up already ? keep us posted.

Thanks Joe05 and Anon.

Called SIN office today and our records are now in their system. They mentioned that at some locations it could take a few days after landing. So looks like about a week at most for the Social Services database to be updated from Immigration with one´s record in order to apply for SIN Card.

Yes, no job lined up yet. Looking in my expertise, IT. But savings may hold out for a bit. Housing is surprisingly inexpensive in northern and far western Ontario compared to Chicago and Toronto, that was able to buy a place already.

Did find out that Ontario´s 3-month wait for health insurance begins from the day of landing (which is stamped in the passport), rather than the day of registration with them. This is good news for those looking forward to health coverage in that province.

In the meantime, will keep everyone posted on any interesting immigration events of note. Hang in there you guys, as you´ll be there soon too.

Congratulations, Richard, and best of luck as you get established. We landed in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia when visited Maine, but went back the same day and intend to go back to Canada permanently in June or so after house here is sold. Will post details of landing but have been so busy cleaning out junk. Will e-mail you. Good luck with the job search.

Thanks Bob, and congratulations to you too.

We came back too and intended to return permanently in a few months after house is sold. Wondering where you´ll move to. Do you intend to sell current house and use proceeds to buy one there? That´s the dilemma we faced, but just squeezed buying a small house there until current is sold. Hate idea of putting everything into storage, renting an apartment, and moving again to final place.

Interested in your progress and details when you can as our program and situation is so similar to yours.

Best regards.

Goods To Follow - Examples ? (in reply to: Landed!)
I have my PR Visa and planning to land in Windsor in a couple of months. I´m a little confused about the amount of detail they expect in the lists of goods I´m bring. I can´t imagine they care how many toothbrushes or pairs of socks I´m bringing across - and if its just high dollar items, how high $ do they need to be to warrant inclusion ?
