Subject: Sponsoring an adult brother
  Hi All:

My brother just received the letter asking him to send his passport for PR stamping. I applied for my PR through skilled worker category last September (06). I am currently on a postgraduate work visa which will expire in Feb ´07. I dont want to be out of status after that. I was wondering if my brother can sponsor me and if that would help me jump the immigration queue.

The specific questions I have in my mind are:

1. How long will it take? Because if it takes longer time for the sponsorship category than the skilled worker category, then it wouldn´t make sense.

2. Is it ok if the person being sponsored is already in Canada on a work visa?

3. Whats the financial impact - the fees for sponsoring etc.? Please do not include here the financial stability that brother have to prove to sponsor, that is already taken care of.

4. Will a open work permit be issued to the person being sponsored till such time a PR is issued?

I know that he can sponsor me under the fifth clause given below:

You can sponsor relatives or family members if they are:

1. Your mother or father

2. Your grandmother or grandfather

3. A child whom you adopted outside Canada and you were a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada at the time the adoption took place, or a child whom you intend to adopt in Canada

4. Your brother or sister, nephew or niece, grandson or granddaughter, if he or she is an orphan, under 18 years of age and not married or in a common-law relationship

5. Any other person with whom you have family relationship if you do not have a spouse, son, daughter, mother, father, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother, uncle, aunt, niece or nephew who is a Canadian citizen, registered Indian or permanent resident or whom you may sponsor. If you believe you are in this situation, contact the Citizenship and Immigration Canada Call Centre.

He IS unmarried, and DOESN´T have kids or any other relatives who is PR or canadian citizen.

I thank you all for your time and your help,

Regards,
Balaji
