Subject: Hard finding a job
  Hi people -

I am a PR since March 06 and am currently having a horrid time trying to get an interview. Now I have quite a few impressive qualifications in my home country of England but they dont seem to mean diddly squat here in canada - anyone else having the same problem or managed to overcome it? I am in newfoundland which does not help as there is a real mentality that still exists of its not what you know but who you know.
Is it worth getting my degrees assessed to canadian standards - or is it just a case of discrimination through and through - please reply

it might be credential recogition but you are also living in the most economically depressed part of the entire country. If you are not in the oil and gas industry I doubt that there are many opportunities.

I hope you are white. If so, I would say try the Newfie chicks. They are great fun and have cute accents. I would only worry about AIDS. Newfie tops Canada in AIDS. Just have fun instead of whining about discrimination. Now if you are a non-white, well suck it up and behave yourself. In any country, it greatly enhances your chances if you know people and make lots of friends.

Canada is quite conservative in recognizing and hiring foreign workers. Agencies are quyite eager to evaluate your degrees for $$$ and issue a great looking document, but you still will be ignored.

Even here in BC, where they are begging for workers, there is that sense of provincialism.

There will even be a thought to return to school and get MORE degrees, but... with little avail.

My partner Ben got a great job immediately... he is younger and we have a lot of friends here in Vancouver... so he got an introduction and then got the position.

Many immigrants are underemployed... too overqualified... and you are right... even degrees from US are met with susipcion and noone cares.

I do know that Whistler is hiring like crazy.. and your chances are great you would get hired there.

It is a struggle, but worth it.

Good luck...
