Subject: Police clearance from Indian Embassy/Consulate
I just had my interview few days back in LA. It went fine.
At the end they asked to submit Orignal police certificae from India. They told me to get it from indian consulate/Embassy in US.
I did submit my police clearance from india from local authorities but they said they need it from Indian embassy here.
Is anywhere aware of the process of getting it from indian consulate in india. I checked related topics in this forum and checked indian embassy in washington website and indian consulates in New york, chicago sites. I think they do provide police clearance certificates.
I have some questions like
1)I read we have to send our passport to embassy and the whole process can take upto 5 weeks so do they keep our passport for all this duration or do we send it in end once we get clearance from india and they need to stamp it in passport.
2)Can we apply in any embassy/consulate for it or do we have to apply to certain consulate. Is it possible if we apply to certain consulte they take less time then other or do they all go through same channel and take same time.

Does anyone in the forum has got there police clearance form the indian embassy. If someone has and can share there expirence or the process of appying then that would be very helpfull.

Thanks
Jas

Jas,

You need to apply at the consulate your place of residence falls under.
It´s avery simple process. If your passport was issued in the US, then you´ll get it done in 3-5 days. If your passport was issued in India, then It´ll take 5 weeks.

But the good thing is that in the second case, you don´t have to send you passport to them with the application. You just send a copy and wait until they get clearance from India. They´ll let you know when it´s ready and you can send your passport after that for stamping.

and 5 weeks is the max. They have some guidelines for the police departments in India that if they don´t send a a response in 5 weeks, the applicant is assumed to have a clean history and is issues a clearance..
