all depends what you are looking for. Having spent considerable time in both I am looking to canada primarily for social/political/environmental reasons.

Ozzies are great folks - true characters; very warm, intelligent, well educated ,laidback and quite humourous and the geography is truely amazing but love of the sun is required as they have a lot of it. They have a very rightwing government that seems to copy everything we do here in the US. It is also a dilemma if you want to travel home to see family every so often as airfare is expensive.

I spent over a decade living in the USA before I moved to Australia. With a significant number of close relatives in Canada, I applied for and became a Canadian PR. Working for a Canadian company, I get to travel to Canada a lot and have since dropped the idea of moving house.

My reasons were centered on economy, weather, and healthcare. Aus economy is much stronger than Canadian economy. Aus unemployment 5.3% (like USA) and Canada (7.5%). Underemployment in Canada is rife, particularly for migrants of color. This is getting worse as more and more migrants reach Canada and crowd cities like Toronto. Shalwar Kameez and Punjabi language are heard more often than English.

I found the Toronto weather absolutely atrocious. It is either very cold or bloody cold 9 months of the year. If you like that, then that´s fine. I cant stand that much cold that much of the year.

The public medical system in Canada compared to Australia is in shambles. Long waiting lines and substandard service and equipment. Aus medicine has its problems, but nowhere near Canada.

At the end of the day, your decision to migrate should depend on what is important to you. The current right wing Howard govt does not bother me at all. A post mentioned distance to subcontinent from Australia. Its a couple of hours difference... no big deal.

If you want a country with great weather, great lifestyle, strong economy and job opportunities and good public welfare system, apply for Australia. However, Aus migration is about 10 times tougher than Canada. Good luck. Let me know if I can help answer any specific questions.
