Subject: NAFTA Job exemptions? Any experience? |

Ok here´s the story:
I am an American living in Toronto (my wife is sponsoring me) and I have been looking high and low for a job. Well, I have a second interview with a company tomorrow for a great position and I think it might be NAFTA exempt, meaning I do not need HRDC confirmation. If it is considered part of the NAFTA I can simply go to the border and get the work visa. Does ANYONE know if this job sounds exempt or not?
The job title: Engineering System Sales
Functions: Corporate sales of highly technical engineering products.
My credentials: BS in Geography and a specialization Spatial Information Processing (GIS, GPS, Engineering Systems, etc...). And, one year of professional experience.
I graduated from an American University with 3.49/4.0
I would appreciate ANY input as I need to know what to tell the company tomorrow at the interview.
Cheers

(in reply to: NAFTA Job exemptions? Any experience?) Thanks Sharron, I already read all of that... the problem is the actual interpretation of the NAFTA agreement. I have read a great deal of it and it seems to me that it would be covered.
I think the job could be considered under both the business person and professional section, but its hard to interpret. It could be both because it is Engineering Sales, but I´m not sure how it would work.
Thanks anyhow

idea (in reply to: NAFTA Job exemptions? Any experience?) I would try calling an immigration consultant. I have found that they are very willing to be helpful. The ones I have called have not pushed me to retain their services. I think they realize there are few places to get quick and clear answers about certain issues (like yours!). It is worth a try.

Thought about it (in reply to: NAFTA Job exemptions? Any experience?) I´ve thought about calling one of them but all I really need to do is talk to someone from HRDC to see how they would evaluate it. I just wish that there was a 24hr hotline but there isn´t... oh well... I´ll try to call in the morning before heading to my interview. I doubt I´ll be able to get through though.
Cheers

(in reply to: NAFTA Job exemptions? Any experience?) I also am an American living/working in TO. When I crossed the border Aug 2003 with my job letter, I wasn´t sure what to expect as the NAFTA agreement does have some interpretation latitude. Here´s my situation.....
Worked in California, moved to Canada to be with my guy.
The Canadian division of my company offered me a job IF I could get a work permit. Based on my research it deemed cut and dry 1. Intercompany Transfer 2. NAFTA 3. "Management" position (I was an Assistant Manager in CA, but was a Coordinator in TO). When I crossed, the immigration offier asked what my status was for work permit and I told her NAFTA. She pulled out her reference book and asked me a few questions (i.e. what the co did, how long I had been there and if my new job would have management responsibilities - this answer needs to be yes). After I answered all adequetly, I paid the fee, got the permit and went on my happy way.
Hope this helps. Good luck!
