Subject: Bank account opening
If you are resident of United States and have applied for PR, can you open a bank account in Canada before you have obtained PR?

Can this be done over the phone or internet?

Can you recommend some popular banks in Canada? By popular I mean banks which have relatively good presence in Canada and are choice amongst several porfessional Canadians. For e.g. in U.S. popular banks are Bank of America, Chase. These and other offer almost a free checking with no monthly fees and several benifits like online transactions etc.

Thanks.

just inquired about this issue today. You must have a Canadian social insurance number to open a bank account in Canada.

rest of your question (in reply to: Bank account opening)
the big Canadian banks are Royal Bank of Canada; Bank of Montreal; Scotiabank. all are cross country and well recognized.

No SIN needed (in reply to: Bank account opening)
Hi,
You don´t need a SIN to open a bank account. You can open a bank account in TD Bank without SIN. However, you can not receive a bank card and widthraw money from the bank machine but instead you must go to the bank each time you need to widthraw or deposit and you need a proper ID.

Hope this helps,
Glen Rosen

good to know. the Credit Union I called today (Vancity) said no without SIN and picture ID. I am trying to get my fiance´s settlement money onto the ´good´ side of the ocean rather than having it in a bank/currency that is tied to the US dollar. (we are getting slaughtered) It must be 100% in his control so it cannot be a joint account to meet CIC requirements. I was hoping if we can get him here for a visit that we could move his settlement money. He must open the account in person so that partially answers the question about opening an account online. Probably has to do with new anti-terrorism measures.

I will call TD in the morning. thanks for the info

Thanks Sharon and others for the information.

Mine reasons are similar. I wish to deposit the settlement money early in Canadian Bank (U.S Dollar seems to be depriciating 13% in last 4 months and will more appox. another 10% - see Alan Greenspans article on Financial Times of Nov 19/20. www.ft.com).

My other question is that can this account opening (if I don´t withdraw any money) be done over phone or internet?

Thanks,

banks (in reply to: Bank account opening)
I went back to my Credit Union and pushed the issue with them. Apparently there is an option for a Non Resident bank account. I guess there is some restrictions how the account is used, to comply with anti-terrorism and money laundering legislation. I believe withdrawls must be made in person with sufficient ID. The bank needs IN PERSON, a passport and a credit card. An international drivers license would be a reluctant substitution for a credit card. I would assume this would eliminate any chance to open an account over the internet or by phone.

The added difficulty I am also having is that my fiance cannot take more than $3,000 out of his home country at one time unless he can show that he is permanently leaving the country. Life is so much fun!

Explaination Needed! (in reply to: Bank account opening)
What is a TD? Is it effective for a non-canadian resident to open an account.
