As a US citizen you are only allowed a 6 months stay in Canada as a visitor, unless you can qualify for a work permit or a study permit. I´d suggest you look into studying at a Canadian university or college. If you can get accepted, you apply for a Study Permit (before you enter Canada) and you can come to Canada to stay for the period of time authorized by the permit.

In order to move to Canada permanently you will have to be sponsored by, most commonly, a family member. If you and your g/f work out, and either live together for a year to qualify as common-law partners, or get married, she can then sponsor you for a Permanent Resident visa.

Well thanks for the information.. As of right now.. my whole family lives in the united states so i could not be sponsered by anyone to go over there... I was also thinking about the study permit.. and apply to a school up there.. I´m a very well qualified student.. with very high marks.. the problem would be the money and a place to live through...

As for getting married.. If we were to do so.. and she sponsers me for a Permanent Resident visa.. How hard would it be for me to obtain that.. Do i still need to get a work permit.. or can i work with that Visa?

I have a lot of questions.. cause this is.. basically either a turning point in my life.. or having to let go of something i care very much for.

I thank you for your reply.

The work permit would be a separate issue than applying for a PR visa, in other words you don´t have to have a work permit to be sponsored by a spouse for PR. And being sponsored by a spouse for PR doesn´t "give you" a work permit. You cannot work in Canada without a work permit unless you have Permanent Resident Status, although a Study Permit does allow you to work some jobs at the school or university you´re attending - and, last I heard, they were expanding those allowances to include some off-campus work for Study Permit holders.

Another option that I just now thought of, and am not too familiar with, that you might want to check into is a BUNAC visa. Here´s a link: http://www.bunac.org/usa/workcanada/
