Subject: Work and travel while application is pending
I am a Canadian citizen and have sponsored my swedish common law partner for permanent residency. We submitted our application with everything last february 2006. We have still not recieved any information as to the status of our applications. We have a trip to the USA coming up and were wondering if she(common law partner) could travel to US ? Also should we apply for a work permit once we recieve the first notification or will it take the same amount of time to get the actual residency card?

Can I travel while PR is in Process (in reply to: Work and travel while application is pending)
I have been applying for PR and should recieve my first letter any day now. I want to drive to the states for a week but my tourist visa has expired. I know my tourist visa is still valid while my application is being processed. Can I get back into Canada if I leave?

Warren - if you filed IN Canada, no, you can´t leave. If you did outside then yes, you can. I assume you did IN Canada as you mentioned the first notification - yes, you can apply for a work permit as soon as you get this (but you still can´t leave Canada until you get full PR). I recommend you do apply because my full PR came through almost a year after I got first approval and I needed to work for the money at that point!
