Subject: BUNAC working holiday problems
  Hi

just applied for my BUNAC working holiday maker to get my arse in
Canada legally. Just a couple of questions;

(i)I need to send a letter of reference as im a non student. What should this entail? And who can write me one?

(ii)Also, i have to attend a presentation in Toronto when i land, hpw do i organize this? What if i cant get a flight the same day the presentation takes place? Its to get me a social sdecurity number.

Other than that are there any other things i need to know about my BUNAC visa? Does it guarantee me a prolonged 12 month stay when i get to Canada?

Thanks in advace for any replies,
Ryan

Hi Ryan

In response to question (i)- it says on the documentation/application form who should write the reference and it also states what info they need to state. (I think it´s their name, how they know you, how long they know you and your suitabiity for work in Canada. It doesn´t have to be long winded. I got a former manager of mine to do it.)

(ii) I´mnot sure about this bit, not really looked into or bothered about it.

The other thing you need to have in place is travel insurance, either BUNACs own policy which is quite expensive or your own policy which meets their criteria. Again you should have received note of what this is, I think it´s incuded in the Travel Planner they send you.

As for the 12 mth stay then yes, once you have been issued your visa then you are entitled to work for 12 months in Canada. (It´s not like the Australian visa where you can only work for a max of 3mths with any one employer. You can be with the same employer for the full 12 mths)

WARNING - check your visa AS SOON AS it´s stamped on entry to Canada. I know of someone who´s visa was stamped for 7mths instead of 12 and it took a lot of fighting to have this extended. So check before you leave immigration at the airport.

You turn up for one of the dates they give you.

Then you probably can´t get a SIN (what you call an SSN). The presentations are MANDATORY, they help you get the paperwork done in next to no time so I suggest you get there!

Yes, you can work until 1 year after it is validated at the border - so if you don´t work the first 3-4 weeks, too bad - you can´t extend it after 12 months just because you haven´t technically worked here the full 12 months (you can´t extend it even if you have done the full 12). You can do pretty much any job but don´t hold out much hope of getting a good one - the Canadian job market is trick, even more so for foreigners. I don´t mean to sound down but I came here under BUNAC and had a heck of a time getting anywhere, even with a degree! But if you only want hospitality industy or so then sure, you can pay your way through and have enough to travel afterwards.

One thing I did notice I think is that BUNAC only require travel insurance from them for the first 3 months. Theirs IS expensive so I suggest for the other 9 months you find cheaper insurance!
