| Subject: Travelling while PR is In Progress |

I have been applying for PR while living in Canada and should recieve my first letter any day now. I want to drive to the states for a week but my tourist visa has expired. I know my tourist visa is still valid while my application is being processed but only in Canada. Can I get back into Canada if I leave?

You´ll need to go to the Canadian consulate in US and get a letter from them in order to reenter into Canada.

Before you make a decision, you should read section 5.28 of the Processing Manual for Inland Applicants here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/manuals-guides/english/ip/ip08e.pdf
That said, you will find additional info here, http://www.cic.gc.ca/manuals-guides/english/op/op11e.pdf in Section 23.1 that says, "When processing applications for temporary resident visas for foreign nationals with an
application for permanent residence in Canada in progress, officers should take into consideration whether approval in principle (first-stage approval) has been granted. It is consistent with IRPA, and in the best interests of both CIC and the applicant, to facilitate the re-entry of these applicants as temporary residents in order to continue processing their application for permanent residence
from within Canada."
However, apparently this info is not included in the corresponding ENF manual that port of entry officers refer to, so there´s no guarantee the IO who finally assesses your entry will have read that. There´s always a risk of being denied entry and that´s why most people suggest it´s better to wait until you have PR to leave Canada, if at all possible.
Just a word about the Canadian Consulate in the States - it´s a big deal to go there, and a long wait for something they may tell you they can´t give you. Then where are you?

Unless you really love the adventure, or traveling to the US is a matter of life or death, before taking any chances, and putting your life into an immigration officer´s hands, I would remain in Canada..
There´s no better place than a safe one!
