Subject: a very tough decision has to be made

We have a foreign credential software engineer works at my techs support job here at my company, which is the leading western Canadian cable, ISP, phone provider. I work at this same job before I became PR back to early 2006. At the mean time, I was promoted before I even have my PR, while I am only 20s.

Now there is a problem here, this software engineer who is 35+, seemed have a lot of struggling on the phone. I do not even know who is him/her.

I know he/she is probably way over qualified for this entrance job for high school kids graduated. Of course English is his/her second language.

Tomorrow, I have to sit with her/him and monitor all his/her call, and have to explain the requirement and coach everything. Just have to give him/her an idea about our job.

After that I have to write a review to my manager, see if he/she could still work at this position.

I feel so struggling, I mean I am an immigrants too, I know this is super hard for new PR, if he/she was asked to leave, there will be no EI, nothing, because less than 3 month, basically we could fire anyone anytime without any reason.

However I have to consider our business too, gee, I am only 20s, first time to do such formal stuff??. don??t know what to do, period. What if I make him/her get fire and they have no money in Canada????

Sigh.............I could see myself over here, I was at the exactly same stage before....

Get a grip on yourself, would you. You are enjoying your PR status too much. Stop acting like you are the best PR Canada has ever had. Geez..getting permanent residency in 20´s is not as big of a deal as you are making it. In fact most international students get their status at the same stage of their life as you did. I personally know at least 10 person who has done it and in a much better position than you are. Stop kissing your own ass. What an Idiot!

DB, why do you bother with this place? They treat you like dirt and you deserve better.

Do your job. Your new employee (new immigrant) needs to get comfortable with the english language - just like you do. either he can do it- or he can´t. People need to understand that credentials mean nothing if you can not talk to a client on the phone or write an email/letter.

If there are some classes he can take, tell him to take them and come back when he is done. You are selling phone support! As a customer, nothing would make me more crazy than being angry at my cable service and then not be able to speak to someone in english to solve my problem.

DB,

A tip:
You can think like an immigrant, or like a professional, or both. If you really care about the job getting done right, think professionally. Leave the immigrant part of you alone when it comes to work-related stuff. Showing compassion and closing both your eyes just to "be nice" and to get someone a job that can´t get done, will affect YOU at the end of the day, because you said it was OK to hire that person. You can give a little, but be greedy whenever you have to sign your name. Built credibility, don´t destroy it!

128.194 - for the record, eagles fly over Vancouver all the time and bears sometimes go in the back yards of houses in North Vancouver.
