Subject: Driving License
  Dear all

I am moving to toronto in a month or two. About the driving license exchange program between NY and Toronto I want to know the followings:
1. Do they take away the NY license itself? or
2. they only need the DMV records?

My intention is to retain the NY Driving license.

Appreciate your valuable advise and suggestions.

Ahsan

I had TX license; that was taken away by MTO in Toronto and sent back to Texas DMV.

If you have at least 2 years of US driving history then you´ll be given directly G license, otherwise G-2 (w/some restrictions and higher insurance rate).

If your license don´t contain when it was issued, then you need to have DMV record stating the time you drove in the US. Anyway, it´ll be needed for better insurance quote.

You didn´t say whether you have landed or not - if you haven´t landed you shouldn´t give up your NY license yet, as you will not be able to get insurance to drive in Canada until you are a PR. If you give up your NY license it could trigger your US insurance company to drop your policy. I know Ontario has a provision that you must get an Ontario license within 90 days of establishing residency, but if you are in Canada as a visitor/student/etc., you are part of the Temporary class and not actually able to "establish residence".
