Subject: TRV/marriage question
TIA for any information you can give. I have been corresponding for 6mo with a man from Syria. My BIL and sister are writing a letter of invitation to invite him here to visit. We will have an MLA notarize the letter as he is a friend of my BIL. He is coming to watch a world Event here in my city. Also, we would like to see if we are compatible IRL. He already has a plane ticket for three weeks stay to show the CIC that he does indeed intend to leave Canada.

questions:

1. What are the chances that he will get here?
2. If we decide we want to marry can it be done here in Canada?
3. Then what? Does he have to return to Syria for me to sponsor him here or can he leave Canada and re-enter immediately?
4. If he must leave... what will we need to prove that the marriage is legitimate?
5. How long can it take for him to return to Canada on a spousal Visa
6. Will it be more likely to be approved if they see that he is willing to leave on the date of his departure?

Thanks in Advance

Having a politician sign a letter means very little. What content is in the letter is the issue for refusal or acceptance.

If he is coming to see (a Soccer game) and he arrives with a return ticket for six months later he will be back on the plane in seconds.

Average processing times for a spouse through Damascus is four months and add a month for Mississauga CPC (pretty good) For within Canada eight months to get stage one then another year at least to get PR card.

Anyone can bake a cake but some can make it look more visually appealing. A piece of paper proves your married but proves nothing to your bona fideness of your relationship.

Thank you Roy. His ticket is for three weeks...the length of the Event that is taking place here.

I have another question. If he does get a visa and arrives here... if his Visa is stamped for more than one month, we can change the ticket. How long is a visa usually stamped for? On average?

Also, I´m assuming by your answer, that there would need to be proof of love re: the marriage and wedding. Can we show e-mail´s, IM´s, honeymoon photos? What in your opinion would "ice the visually appealing cake?" I am also in Alberta if that makes any difference.
Thanks

visa can be stamped for 3 months, or 6 months max. They will make it short if they are unsure he will return home. Plane tickets can be changed or thrown away so that is no guarantee.

What CIC will be looking for is that your guy has economic reasons to go home - a good job, a mortgage, property, family responsibilities etc. Once he arrives and goes home as promised, the second visa is issued with less hassle.

We were declined 3 times before finally getting a visa and that involved showing a teaching contract he needed to return home for. If it remotely smells like a romance visit... forget it. CIC has learned the hard way that promises to return home fly out the window when presented with the option of an inland application.

A friendly piece of advice - do nothing (marriage) this trip. IRL takes more than 3 weeks and it would be well worth your while to take a trip to Syria before deciding your future.
