Subject: Is an immigration lawyer or consultant needed?
Is it necessary to hire a lawyer or consultant when sponsoring a spouse who is already in Canada?

Bill being an Immigration consultant who attends an awful lot of spousal appeals for overseas sponsorships gone wrong I would tend to disagree.

Out of status or in status Inland spousal sponsorships can not be appealed so Pauline make your choice wisely. This is not an attempt to drum up business but to explain to all what should be considered.

IF you retain anyone to assist you on an inland sponsorship be sure to obtain the details of service in the contract.

Make sure they will (personally) work on your file instead of an employee.
That they are to attend any marriage interview called by CIC.
That they will do a test marriage interview with you and your partner before said interview.
That they will work on your file if stage one approved up until your partner is a PR.

THEN ASK QUESTIONS. Get to speak to other former client´s who he/she has won their inland sponsorship. Get to speak to ones that he/she can detail why that spousal sponsorship was difficult. Like a huge age difference, different religions, different ethnic make up or colour etc. etc.

I have had some strange ones but they are the ones you remember for ever. 76 year old married to a 39 year old with a 22 year old daughter. They were asked how many TV´s in the two bedroom apartment. The daughter said one TV, the wife said two TV´s and the Canadian sponsor said three TV´s! I jumped in when the sponsor gave his answer and asked him to explain the TV´s.

He said one TV that is in the living room has cable,
the one in his bedroom gets two channels but it is fuzzy unless you play with the rabbit ears,
the TV in his step daughters bedroom does not work!

The Immigration officer asked him "Why would you call the one in your daughters bedroom a TV if it does not work? His reply was "What do you call your car if it won´t start, a Horse?

All the luck in the world to you Pauline but understand that there are some who submit BOGUS spousal sponsorships so do your utmost either way you choose to prove your relationship.

It is not Mandatory. (in reply to: Is an immigration lawyer or consultant needed?)
It is not mandatory. But think, one can professionally and accurately dealt with, if someone well familier with the immigration issues can be hired.
