Push and Pull Factors:What made you choose canada?

Compared to the US I find canada is a very clean country. In fact, when foreigners come to visit, they always tell how impress they are that it´s looks so clean. There are nice lakes you can swim into relatively close to cities.
Familly values are important and quality of life is valued too. It´s more socialist than the US. Work and economy is important but people tend to "live" a little more.
I also find there is less segregation in Canada than in the US.
On the other side, the taxes are much higher than in the US. You pay more sales taxes and revenu taxes. Depending on where you live in the US your money goes further there. But when you look at the social services that are offered in Canada, you know where your money goes.

What made me decide to go back to Canada? I think the main reason is sentimental...this is where I am from and I missed the clean and cool air, clean water and the snow. Another major factor is I am thinking about having children soon and Canada is a safer place and has better laws to protect women with children such as paid maternity leaves and parental leaves for the father. another thing is that the direction in which the US is going is concerning to me...making abortion illegal, the involvement of the church in the government and the war. It all seems like a snowball that is going to get bigger and bigger.
Canada just fits better with my values as far as what I want to give to my children...a clean place to grow up and caring about our environement.

I´m from a Sweden which has a society that is relatively similar to Canada. There are even higher taxes, but similar socialistic values, high gender equality, clean air and water.

Prior to moving to Canada, I lived 5 years in the US and having experienced all three countries (I´ve been in Canada for three years now), Canada as a society is more like Sweden than the US. I feel much more at home in Canada than I ever did in the US.
I agree with Anonymous in that I would feel much safer raising children in Canada than the US. I also like the cultural diversity and I´m quite impressed with the level of integration of immigrants into the Canadian society.

I don´t know if I will stay in Canada forever, but it´s a good place and there is IKEA if I ever get home sick.... :-)

India
Clean is a big plus (in reply to: Push and Pull Factors: What made you choose Canada)
I choose canada because of clean air and water and some liberal values what earlier forum user had written.

i am interested in learning about what india is like because... sooooo many people immigrate to canada from india... like alot of my friends and they all talk about how much better it is in canada.. yet.... they love to go back home and they are really very proud to be indian... so i was wondering why people in general choose canada to immigrate to.. and why someone from india would consider leaving to go to another country.... i have lived in canada my whole life and really i can´t imagine that another country is not like canada... (i know they are not the same but i can´t really imagine what it would be like, what you would like about your mother country and what would make you want to leave).. eventhough my parents are immigrants and almost all of my friends were born in another country, i still can´t understand....i was hoping for you to help[ me better understand...

What made you push away from your home country? What were some pull factors that attracted you to Canada? Was it what you expected it to be?
