  Dear all.
Ive been in Vancouver now for 6 months on a work visa,
I haven´t been on this site for some time now as ive been very busy settling in. I found this site very good Whilst I was going through the process of coming over here.
There was one post however that kept coming up called "not in canada" or something. They kept going on about how theres no work here etc..
Well since ive been here (from the UK) ive been flat out, Im a tradesman. There are jobs everywhere in every sector,
every other shop in malls and high streets have signs asking for staff, to say there is a staff shortage her is an understatement!
I was on a building site the other week and overheard the site contractor saying he cant get any laborers to work and he´s paying $20 per hour!! theres work everywhere here, the only ones who don´t work must be fussy or lazy!
Good luck to anyone coming over, its a good choice.

the best part of Vancouver is yet to come - spring. Watch for pretty yellow flowers on the trees...that is the signal.

My job brings me into contact with hundreds of employers. Happy is correct - staffing is a huge challenge. 4% unemployment rate means there are more jobs than people to do them.

The problem seems to be the disconnect between the skills people bring with them to Canada and the jobs available.

CIC does not run a quote on NOC codes. If 50,000 engineers arrive each year, 45,000 will need to find work in another sector. There is simply not 50,000 new engineering jobs each year.

Perhaps Canada needs to rethink its PR criteria, or new immigrants need to rethink what sort of work they are prepared to do that first 18-24 months while they get themselves established.

Probably a little bit of both.

In the mean time Happy... glad you are pleased with your decision.

The easy fix is to give PNP or province much bigger voice on PR quotes, what people in Ottawa know about local situation eh? we should in future maybe even replace federal skilled workers as Provincial norminate program...
advantage of this is like pre-approve your mortgage, it´s good for you too. otherwise you gotta end up like a lot of AMERICAN who are suffers from subprime, can´t afford it.
If you can´t find a job or there is no jobs for you in Canada, what you gotta do?

Thank you Happy!! Its nice to hear such things just before you decide to leave a country for another. I hear mixed comments about Canada and get anxious sometimes.
I am anxious because I am very well qualified (I am a Pharmacist and have a Master´s degree in Health Administration). I have a very good job right now. But I also want to move because I wish to be around my family. The thought that whether Canada will absorb me like the country I am living in right now makes me anxious.
