I was taking care of my grandmother who was very ill. she passed away in may 2005 and i was not able to work for some time because i was so distraught. once i was able to work again i could not find any work in the US i was hoping someone could advise me on how i would be able to get a work permit for canada or to move there under these curcumstances?? please help me!

tough. a work permit sounds virtually impossible due to your education and work record. The other option is for your boyfriend to sponsor you - but, you either need to be married or have been living common law for a year.

from what you are saying, marriage is not in the plans for now. If you come for a ´visit´ and take up residence with your boyfriend you can keep your status legal and then apply after a year as a common law couple. Keep in mind, your boyfriend will assume legal and financial responsibility by contract with the Canadian government when he files the application.

word of caution about the ´visit´. while you are ´visiting´ Canada it is not legal for you to work. you will also need to return to the US and re-enter every 6 months. Each time you do this, the border staff can limit your visit or refuse you because they don´t think you are really visiting etc.

I am sure this is not the answers you were wanting but I hope it helps.

Tracy,

For what I see, I think that the only way that you may qualify for a work permit is if you get married or live in a common law relationship for at least one year.

Living Canada every 6 months and re-entering Canada as Sharon suggested is not going to work very well for you.
I can give you a heads up of what might happen.
When you try to re enter Canada, CBSA officer will start questioning the reason of your visit and as soon as he/she smells that you are not a turist and you have intentions to stay..hmmm you will be refuse of entry.
If you enter Canada, try to extend your permit as a visitor.
And as soon as you get married (if it is in the plan) then you guys may apply from within Canada for your PR status.
