Subject: US Citizen wishes to immigrate - needs assistance
Forgive me in advance if these questions have been asked. I have researched this for quite some time and received contradictory information.

I am a US citizen (Atlanta, GA), self-employed, with a CIS degree from a major university, and 10 years experience in the information technology field. I have taken the assessment test and I have more than enough points to qualify.

I have read that because of NAFTA, 6 IT positions do not require HRSDC validation. I understand that a work permit is required and I must get that after the job offer. Do I need to do any other kind of paperwork to increase my chances of getting a job offer in Canada?

I have also read that my work experience will not be considered as valid in Canada. Many of the people mentioning this were from Europe, Asia, or Africa. Is this also true with someone from the US?

Should I try to apply through a provincial nominee program or is that for after I have a job and when I want to become permanent? In particular, I am interested in Winnipeg, Manitoba but also considering other areas.

I also have a domestic partner who was born in Vietnam but is a US citizen. He also has a degree but little work experience. How is he affected?

Are there any websites that cater to US Americans wishing to work and immigrate to Canada?

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

I would just start at the cic web site. They have all the answers to your questions. There is no real difference for a US citizen to immigrate to Canada than a citizen from another country. Only with respect to the office you can apply to. If you are the main applicant, your partner has little affect on the application.

FYI - the Canada Immigration website can be found at www.cic.gc.ca

As far as your domestic partner - you can apply to sponsor him as a common-law partner/spouse once you are approved for PR in the skilled worker class, but you´re looking at a while to wait - both for approval as a skilled worker, and then for approval for your partner in Family Class. Remember that US citizens are only allowed to visit in Canada for six months at a time without receiving extended status at the POE, which isn´t easy to get. As a PR you will have to remain in Canada in order to apply to sponsor your partner, which could require a period of separation for you.

Thank you both for your replies. However, I have two important questions.

Do Canadian companies consider accept work experience and degrees from US universities as valid? I have read that they don´t from other countries, and I would like to know before I apply for jobs in vain.

Will I need to reestablish credit history once I am in Canada?

Sorry if I am asking too many questions but your information will benefit others on this board as well. Once again, thanks for your knowledge and insight.

US citizen with domestic partner moving to canada (in reply to: US Citizen wishes to immigrate - needs assistance)
Hi,

Im a US citizen and currently working as a patient transporter at a hospital, at same time im in school taking culinary arts and will be graduating in June.

As i have mentioned my partner of four years and I would like to move to canada, my partner isnt a US CItizen he´s actually having a complicated immigration situation here in the US. He´s been ordered to voluntarily depart due to a problem with his adjustment of status, to be honest were hesitant if he will comply it´ll be too hard for both of us to be separated from each other but on the other hand he would do comply due to he doesnt want a deportation record on his name.

I would like to find a job in Canada after i graduate school or find a job based in my work experience, would it be possible when i applied for a job in Canada to put my partner on my application as spouse or common law partner so when i get a working visa he could get one too? Would it be a problem to canadian immigration if he stays in the US ( dont comply with the US voluntary departure order) until i apply and find a job and get working visa to canada? Or should he wait in his native country until i get working visa?

Please advice. Thank you.

Rob
