Subject: what happens to the US citizenship?
  Hi all

Will my son lose his US citizenship acquired by birth if he becomes canadian PR? He is at present 7 months old.

I think long back I read that US and Canada have some treaty or something like it allows for Dual citizenship. How can I find more on this topic?

If you know about this or have any such link on the above, please let me know.

Thanks

Hi. No, your son will not lose his US citizenship by becoming a Canadian PR. Having Permanent Residency is not the same as having citizenship - so he will remain a US citizen regardless of his PR status in Canada. If, at some future date, he decides he wants to acquire Canadian citizenship, he may or may not lose his US citizenship. I was under the impression that a dual-citizenship was possible between the US & Canada also, but I´m not positive. Regardless, becoming a PR does not require that you eventually apply for Canadian citizenship - he could remain a PR in Canada for life, as long as he maintains the residency requirements that are currently resident in Canada for two years out of every five year period.

oromum is correct. Even if one becomes a Canadian citizen, U.S. citizenship can still be retained. Canada allows dual and U.S. tolerates dual.

Technically this is correct. But the U.S. does not strictly enforce this rule. It´s muddled and difficult to enforce because dual citizenship by marriage or birth right is allowed.

If you´re worried, then remain PR.

I have a friend who was borned in Canada to a Canadian dad and an American Mom... She has both citizenships.
I heard that in the US, when you turn 18 yrs old if you want you can choose one or the other citizenship... or you can keep both! (This was the case of this friend I´m telling you about)...

I have also a friend whose one parent was American. She could keep both citizenship (the daddy´s and mummy´s one).

Just like Lily said.

Come to think of it, my daughter should have 3 citizenships according to that logic. I am assuming that nobody is allowed 3 passports these days ....mmmm ...funny!

CBV333,
Our kids are like yours... they can have 3 passports if they wish to do so... all three countries allow other citizenships... when we came to the UAE for the first time... the immigration officer at the airport told us we were like the United Nations because of all the nationalities involved! :O)
