I just received first stage approval for my in-Canada spouse sponsored application for permanent residence. I am a US citizen resideing in Powell River, BC. How long can I expect it to take until I receive my landing papers and PR card? Thanks. . .

How long after AIP before you get PR? It will pretty much depend on how long it takes for CIC to get the results back from your background checks, no way to tell for sure. From what I understand, this is pretty much all that´s left to do once you receive first stage approval - but it can take from 3-9 months.

What exactly is a firststage approval? I applied for an extension of my visitor visa as well and they gave me the extension..Is that my first stage approval? Does that mean I can apply for a work permit now?

If you had a ticket for speeding or parking then no, but if it´s a DUI (especially if you hurt someone)that could be deemed worthy of a criminal record!
