I recommended to a recent arrival from Turkey to settle in Richmond. He got more apartment for his $1,000 rent and he is close to transit. It is 45 minutes to downtown. In 2 years we will have skytrain which means 30 minutes to downtown.

What sort of work are you looking for? Downtown Vancouver is not necessarily the center of the universe for employment.

´recent arrival from turkey´ is a friend I met here at canadacity! He did not know where to live when he arrived so I suggested Richmond. he wanted something safe and quiet and it has proved to be a good decision for him.

Richmond is a good size community and you could likely find IT work without going into Vancouver every day.

no... what I meant was that there could very well be work in the suburbs of Vancouver (such as Richmond) without having to commute downtown.
