Subject: Canadian Tire - costs?
  Hi

In exporting the car from the US, I have heard that Canadian Tire is contracted with CIC to make the appropriate changes to the car.

I was wondering as to how much does it cost? and is there anything that we can get done here in the US that would help keeping the costs lower.

Thanks

I think it´s about $200 for the alterations. Typically they just turn on your daytime running lights and change your speedometer to read in kilometers instead of miles. You also need to have the LATCH child seat system in place; otherwise you´ll have to have that installed (it´s standard in all US cars since 2001 or so). I think it can be quite expensive, and is something you can have done before you move.

Yes, wananbe is correct. Canadian Tire quoted me $175 for a 1999 Toyota to install an electronic unit that enables daytime running lights. Otherwise nothing else was required. That price also included administration and paperwork processing. Most American cars´ speedometers in the past 20 years already come with km graduations in addition to miles.

Now you are on the topic, can you tell me if my Toyota Corolla 2001 from USA will be admissible to enter Canada ?

I tried to look up the website for RIV (registration of imported vehicles) but it was not clear and I need to be sure. (can´t function on "maybe´s")

Also where can I find information about the paperwork for importing car to Canada ? thanks

Your 2001 Corolla is admissable. To import, you don´t do any paperwork yourself, the customs officer does that with you at the time of import.

First, you must "export" your car from the U.S. Here, you must notify the U.S. Customs border post at the point you intend to cross at least 72 hours in advance. You do this by sending that post the original title of the car and 2 copies. At the time of crossing, you report to the U.S. Customs post to complete the export.

Next you then "import" your car. Normally you would do this at the time of landing. It would be included on your "imported goods" list downloadable from the CIC website. At landing you would submit this form and fill out the car registration forms with Canadian Customs. If you choose to import your car later, at landing it must be listed on your "goods to follow" list which you would submit. This is the same form but checked "goods to follow".

Correction - send 2 copies of the car´s title to U.S. Customs, and keep the original in your posession for landing.

RE: Daytime Running Lights

If anyone is a do-it-yourselfer and would like to save a few bucks, look at this link for a DRL (Daytime Running Lights) Module:
http://www.autobarn.net/des20013.html

I did not buy it from that specific website, but that´s one of the many websites I came up with when I typed Designtech+DRL in my search engine. I installed it in my wife´s car and it works like a charm.

The model I have is made by Designtech, Model# 20013VA

One more question. How dow we know Canada will accept owner customization for a listed model needing DRL, that is not done by their designated representative, Canadian Tire?

Can I just install the DRL before taking my camry 99 for inspection at Canadian tire? That will save me about $140
