Subject: Temporary Resident/Work Permit Question.
I´m going to be in Canada for six months on a temporary resident visa, or a visitor´s visa. I actually have a couple questions here..

1) How hard is it to get an extension if I wanted to stay another six months after my initial six month period is up? What are the requirements and process of an extension? Someone told me that after my initial six months I would have to return to America for four days before I can return to Canada under a renewed temporary resident visa. Is there any truth to this? I would have to leave for four days even if I got my extension approved before my time was up?

2) As a temporary resident on a visitor´s visa, can I apply for a work permit AFTER I´m in Canada? I can´t seem to find this information anywhere. I need to know if it will be possible to work during my stay. Also, what are the limitations of a temporary resident? Will I be able to open a bank account as a temporary resident, or sign a short-term lease so I have a place to live while I´m there if I´m not a citizen?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Please help!

1. You must apply to extend your stay or visit at least 30 days before your visa expires. Extension is on case by case basis. You do not have to leave Canada for extension purposes.
2. If you can find work in Canada and are able to obtain work permit then yes you can work. TRV alone does not give you right to work. Lease is not a problem. Bank accounts depend on banks you are dealing with.

YOUR GOING ABOUT THIS THE WRONG WAY!

ALL WORK PERMIT APPLICATIONS FOR FOREIGN NATIONALS MUST BE SUBMITTED OUTSIDE OF CANADA! REGULATION 11 (2) SEE http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/showdoc/cr/SOR-2002-227/bo-ga:l_2-gb:l_1//en#anchorbo-ga:l_2-gb:l_1

You think you must come to Canada, find an employer, get offerred a job, then apply for your work permit. You think that employers will not hire you site unseen or without you attending an interview. NOT TRUE!!!!!

There are so few applicants to fill certain occupations in certain provinces the Federal and Provincial governments are working together so that companies can hire foreign workers. I even got a Roofer and his family back to Ontario after they were deported so if your occupation is in demand there are special rules for those employers. Construction workers in Alberta and British Colombia are way past a crisis need. Plenty highly skilled occupations as well in other provinces.

If you get admitted on a work permit I suggest seeking out a PNP certificate and then applying as a PNP SW applicant.

Coming in as a temporary worker then applying while working in Canada for PR is the future of Immigration to Canada.

Some placement companies only focus on foreign workers and charge the applicant while all services for the employer are free. Others get paid by the employer to find workers and they take a percentage of the persons first years wages.

Google placement companies and make up your own mind you can look at this site which is under construction to see some occupations in high demand

www.canvisaplacement.com

Too many people come from foreign countries and then think the States will give them a Visitor Visa to apply for a temporary work permit but sadly they get refused a US visitor Visa. Sometimes and rarely the whole process can be done via snail mail to the appropriate visa post.

Each Work Permit applicant will have to be able to satisfy the Visa Officer that they have the skills to do the occupation. Family members can come as well, children get student visas and the whole family will get medical FREE coverage after a 3 month residency in certain provinces.

Thanks for all your advice, Roy.

I´m not skilled in the areas that most in-demand employment slots are demanding. I haven´t yet completed my education and I certainly don´t have a skill or trade to offer to Canadian society.. yet. If I applied for a skilled worker´s visa, I would probably be denied because they really have no use for my skills. Which is why I was going to go to Canada under a temporary resident´s visa, and then try to find a job that didn´t require such an amount of education. Does that make sense?

If I enter Canada under a temporary resident visa, and then apply for a work permit after I´m already there, will I automatically be denied a work permit because I didn´t apply outside of Canada?

Skills (in reply to: Temporary Resident/Work Permit Question.)
Ashley, THERE IS NO ONE ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET THAT HAS NO SKILLS. There is no country or individual who wants someone who is down on themself [do you enjoy the company of people who don´t thin enough of themself].

I think that you should look at the list of professionals on the NOC link on the canadian website and see what you like,or are good at, then try your hand at it BEFORE you go to Canada. YOU ARE AN ASSET
