Why is everything in Canada so expensive?

Subject: Why is everything in Canada so expensive?
I was wondering if the life-long Canadians here might have a theory as to why everything´s so damn expensive in Canada? This is compared to prices on the same goods available in the U.S. I´m talking about groceries, cars, and everyday items and services.

Now I know drugs, health care, and medical services are either free or very affordable compared to the States. Could these free or low cost services and benefits be built into the cost of everything else?

Another theory I´ve heard is that a population of 30 million versus 300 million means much less volume sold with required transport of goods over vast distances.

Any thoughts? I don´t have a clue as to why.

Hi Richard,

This is Brian. I have still not moved to Canada , it is a tough decision. My Job in the USA is going on ok, but I alos have a good job offer in Canada. My us green card will take another three years to come, not sure should I move to canada, or wait for another three years for my us green card ? very tough choice. I know things in the usa are so cheap as compared to other dev coutries also the the tax is only 5 per cent as compared to 14 percent in canada. The employer in canada want an answer in another week or so. I am so cofused, may be you can help me out with this because you have lived in usa and have been living in canada for quite some time now.

Brian

I disagree with micah that people in Canada make more money than someone in the US. I recently moved to Canada(just because US greencard is tough to get). Given a choice US is any day better but Canada is a good second option.

My sincere thoughts, no offence to anyone out there

Try living in the UK for a few months...Canada´s prices are extremely low compared...depends where in the states you are i suppose...when I have been I thought most things were comparable., but your liquor and beer are cheaper by far ...Anne

US is surely cheaper than Canada, there is no argument abt that, because what you need to look at is really whats left in the bank at the end of the month, how much is your income does not matter at all.
Some places in the US are more expensive than others, but so is the case within Canada !
If you can stay there for 2 yrs and get the citizenship, then your options are pretty good.

How can a canadian citizen benefit in US as far as work/job goes?

Don´t they then need the TN visa?

Thanks

I was told that it will take 2-2.5yrs to get a Visa stamped, and i was also told by the consultant, from where i have applied that if i have a job offer from canada then the process will take 1.5yrs to get visa.

Believe me i have given all my original documents. Am working in Big FMCG as Senior officer. Can anybody help me out who has contact with employers in canada, who can give me a employment.

It will be greatful if anyone reply to this mail.

Lemme be honest with you.

Its very hard if not impossible for you to get a job in Canada from India. Even if you do manage to secure one, what makes you think that your potential employer will wait for 1.5 years for you??!!

That is one thing... About the time for Visa...
There is no guarantee that your application will be approved for PR. Most consultants are like a big vacuum cleaner with your money at the wrong end! They will take your money and keep taking it for years once you hire them. IT TAKES 5 TO 6 YEARS FOR AN APPLICATION TO BE PROCESSED FROM INDIA. Dont drop your jaw. You can check on the CIC website for processing times.

You dont have to give your Originals to anyone in this whole world for any reason. Everyone asks for copies or attested copies at the most!! Consultants take your originals so they can hit you where it hurts most, if you try to act smart with them.

CIC has made applying for PR so easy that you do not need to hire any consultants. All you have to do is follow the guidelines properly and you will be fine. I strongly recommend you to get your originals back and apply on your own. If you do not understand something, there are many experts here who can guide you in the right direction.

Begin with taking the self- assessment test on the CIC website yourself and proceed.

The website is www.cic.gc.ca

in answer to the original question - 30-300 million...

spread out population and the cost of getting products in small quantities to those communities is high. There are other factors such as how we fund our infrastucture - we pay for roads through gas taxes or we subsidize farmers that produce eggs to keep them in business. Some of our trade agreements make products from Commonwealth countries cheaper in Canada than US - such as china, crystal and fine silver.

if money is the only factor you wish to consider in where you live your life and raise your children - well... lots of Canadians would prefer you wait for that Green Card.

Sharon,
unfortunately economic migration largely depends on "money" factor. I am sorry to say that despite your wish there will be a large reverse exodus of economic migrants after they became canadian ctizen. I have also seen lots of born in Canada ppl too rushing to the southern neighbor equipped with their fancy canadian degrees.
