All,
I need to do my landing procedure for Permanent Residency. I have few questions around it
1> I live in USA. Can i DRIVE BY CAR to canada-usa border and get my landing formalities done for Canada PR ? Do they even do it in land-border check point? If yes, Can anybody please share there experience?
2> I currently hold USA driver´s license. I intend to get PR formalities done and get back to USA. I was told in order to get Canada Driver´s license you need to surrender your USA driver´s license, is this true ? Can someone please elaborate on procedure of getting it? Is there any way to have driver´s license for both the countries (USA as well as Canada ) ?
3> If i have USA driver´s license and intend to get Canada license, what all test do i need to give? How do i get appointment for the same in Toronto ?
4> As i intend to come back immediately( within a week ) to USA after landing procedure for PR is complete, is it possible that i can apply for Health care ( medicare ) and give my friends address ? i know it takes 3 month sometimes but my question is can i even do it ?
Any reply would be greatly appreciated.
Thanking all !!!!

(in reply to: Canada Permanent Residency - Driver's license) 1. Yes
2. Drive back to U.S. on Canada License and renew your US license at the Secretary of State. They will charge you $15.00 for a new one.
3. Go to Secretary of State in Toronto
If you are coming back in a week, why do you want a Canada License?
4. Yes. Give a friend´s address.

Driver's license posting (in reply to: Canada Permanent Residency - Driver's license) Hello,
You can do one of the three things:
a) Surrender your US DL and get a Canada DL.
Come back to US and say that you have lost the license.
Most of the US states will give you a new license. (Keep a photocopy of your US license handy)
b) Before going to Canada, get a second US license from local office. Surrender your US DL and get a Canada DL.
c) Take the written test (very easy). (You have to pay about $100)
In any of the above case, you have to wait for 3-4 weeks to get a actual license in hand. On the day, you will be given a paper copy (with out any picture)
Hope this helps.

Canada Permanent Residency - Driver's license (in reply to: Canada Permanent Residency - Driver's license) I have heard that you need to show 2 years or more driver´s history to get canada driver´s license apart from surrendering the US license.
1> How do i get the history ? Somewhere i read that we need to submit form available online. Please advice
2> Do i need to take appointment in canada for driver´s license or is it just walkin ? ( given the fact that i am going to surrender the license )
Thanks a lot !!!

(in reply to: Canada Permanent Residency - Driver's license) I think option b is risky. If you surrender your old license in Canada and they do a routine check... your license will show invalid as you got a new one. This could be considered misrepresentation and... you know what happens next!
If you surrender your new license, then your old one is invalid in US anyways...
I think the nest option is to follow "Almost Perfect!!´s advice. ;)
If you show 2 years or more without DUI, accidents, speeding tickets etc... you will get a ´G´ grade license which will help you get low insurance premiums.
You will get your history by applying at your secretary of state.
Man! Your answer for question 2 is just a phone call away... I wish I had the Sec. of State, Toronto, number to give you... Try Yellow pages Canada.
Good luck!

Canada Permanent Residency - Driver's license (in reply to: Canada Permanent Residency - Driver's license) Just one last thing. If i surrender my USA license with clean 2 year history .. does that mean i get G-license WITHOUT any written or driving test ? no tests at all ?

Canada Permanent Residency - Driver's license (in reply to: Canada Permanent Residency - Driver's license) Two things :
1> After i have submitted my USA license and obtained Canada license for how long can i drive in USA with canada license ? is canada driver´s license valid for any state in USA ? My plan is to apply for license once i reach USA. I am driving to toronto for my landing formalities for PR.
2> Just wanted to confirm. I got a 1 year visa in october 2006 with validity till October 2007 along with Canada PR paperwork. I was told by my friend that i have 1 year´s time to go to canada to complete PR formalities. I would appreciate if someone could confirm it?
