Subject: Landing question !!

Hi I wish to land in Canada via road from US.

I want to come back to US to attend pending work.I wish to return the same day.Is it allowed and is it possible.

The landing papers say we cannot leave the country until SIN card is received.

Any expertise in above matter

Yes, it is possible. Be honest with your immigration officer about your intentions. If you do not have a Canadian address or if your IO will not accept a Canadian address because you will be returning to the US, s/he will give you a form to complete when you move permanently to Canada for your PR cards. I´m not sure where you read that you must have your SIN before you leave Canada; I´ve never read that or heard of it. You don´t need your SIN until you need to start looking for employment in Canada, so you can opt to apply for it the same day you land (if you have a Canadian address to provide) or when you move.

Make sure you do some extensive search before following the advise from wannabecanadian (BTW nothing personal). I remember atleast 2 or 3 cases when people entering from US were stopped and denied entry WHEn the boarder officer sensed that they were gonna return right away after THE landing. I even remember a case when they had to go back, put their US home on market for sale and rent an apartment well in advance just to assure the officer that they intended to settle down in Canada. These could be isolated incidences and might be cause of the whims and fancy of those teenage looking (no pun intended again) immigration oficers, but you do not want to be the unlucky 0.07%, do you?

I think you could always tell the officer that you intended to stay in a hotel until you found tha apartment and would return to the US to get your stuff. Come prepared with the list of goods to follow.

Sorry Lazy but that is not true.

In the landing procedure, there are very specific reasons about why an immigrant may be refuse of entry such as misrepresentation, crimes, insuficiant funds, not informing CIC about any change in the family composition and I think I am missing a couple more.
BUT there is no reason to refuse of entry someone because has to go back to their place of residence to take care of some affairs before immigrating to Canada.

Officers understand that Immigrant visas are valid for an X period of time and people have to finalize their procedure before moving permantly to Canada.

JJ,

You may enter Canada (if all your documentation is in order) and leave right away if you need to.
IF you fly back instead of driving, be aware that your visa will be no longer valid and you will have to apply for a temporary travel document.

Whereas I´ve never heard of anyone being turned away before landing for not intending to stay, I guess anything is possible. BUT, I´m guessing that they weren´t honest or prepared; as Bill mentioned, there are specific reasons in place to warrant denying entry to someone who is eligible. It would be unusual for border control to concern themselves with immigration issues anyway, since immigration is out of their jurisdiction. There is nothing unusual at all about landing (particularly from the US, but no doubt in general) and returning home to finalize your life before moving. Again, be honest with border control, with your IO, and with customs, and you shouldn´t have any problems.

Happy landing!
