Hey all,
I have received my PR visa several weeks ago and planning to land sometime in Nov or Dec. I have Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and have two patents and would like to start my own business in Canada. I´ll be investing my own money.
I´m currently on H-1 in the States. Where to start? Any good web sites and or advices will be very appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

(in reply to: Starting my own business, where to start?!) Start a software-consultancy company and outsource jobs to India.

Starting a buisness in Canada. (in reply to: Starting my own business, where to start?!) It would be helpful if you could tell me where ( in what Province in Canada ) you will be living. Each Province has it´s own rules and regulations about starting a business.
You will need to register your business with the Provincial Government, and you will need to decide on a formal business name, and what type of business it will be ( a sole proprietorship , a partnership, or a incorporated business ) and the nature of the business you will carry out.
After you have been issued a Provincial Master Business License, with a proper business identification number, you can open a bank account in the name of the company, and get a Goods and Services Tax ( GST ) numnber and a Provincial Sales Tax number.
Do you have any previous experience running a business ? Or is your past experience in the academic world?
Having a computer science degree many not be very helpfull in operating a business. How will you fund this business ? Do you have enough money to live on, as well as fund the new business in Canada? Many new start ups fail due to a lack of capitalisation.
Give me an idea of where you plan to live in Canada, and I can help you with some informational websites about what you plan to do here in my country.

(in reply to: Starting my own business, where to start?!) Canadian Citizen,
Thanks for the detailed response. In my application it was written ON but I haven´t decided where to live; I´m open to any place as long as it is a good place to start a business.
I have done several internships and currently working for a giant IT firm but don´t have experience running business. However, I can find a partner who has such experience. I´m simply an "almost" pure technical guy, not your typical business man. Simply, several companies here in States are willing to buy my patents but I personally prefer to start my own business.
About the money, how sufficient US$200K is? I´m not thinking of starting a huge business initially. Just a medium size business then expand as necessary. I have very good credit in the States so I can get good loan too.
Any guidance will be much appreciated.
