Subject: US Citizen marrying Canadian - Need Info
I´ve searched these forums and can´t find the specific info I´m looking for, so any help would be appreciated.

I´m a US citizen, my fiancee is a Canadian citizen. We´re getting married in the US, but we´re planning on living in Canada and are starting to research the PR process under the family class. My questions are,

1) How early can we submit our application? We´re getting married in August, but can we submit our paperwork together before we´re actually married?

2) If I apply from the States, am I allowed to go into Canada to visit him for extended periods of time or do I need to remain outside the country until everything is complete?

Thanks in advance for the help!

1. The second the two of you get married is the submittion time frame. Go get police clearances and medical done before the wedding date. They must be submitted with application.
2. A visitor is someone coming for a temporary period of time. Read that again and again. It takes s month for CIC to approve your partner as a sponsor. If you arrive to the boirder with funds available and a plan to visit for a temporary period of time WITHOUT YOUR PARTNER, PET, DISHES AND POTS AND PANS, your likely to be allowed entry.

If your plans change, they change.

AVERAGE PROCESSING TIME FOR YOUR APPLICATION IS SIX MONTHS. DO YOU WNAT (NOT) TO WAKE UP NEXT TO YOUR PARTNER FOR HALF A YEAR?

US Citizens may "VISIT´ Canada for up to 180 days, in any 12 month period of time, BUT they may NOT work in Canada, until they have been granted a Permament Resident status card. So yes you can BE in Canada, while awaiting your PR card to be issued, but no working here.

The time it takes to get the PR card varies, by case. Get all the data together now, and submit after your wedding has been registered officially in the USA. Good Luck to you both.

Sorry Jim I think you are missing Roy´s point here.

As a US citizen he / she doesn´t need a visitor´s visa. But his/her admission into the country is a discretion of the CBSA agent at the port of entry. Regardless your nationality (except PR and Canadian citizens, they have the right to re-enter)

You won´t believe how many americans get refused of entry everyday for several reasons.

As long as he/she can convince the CBSA officer at the port of entry that this person is coming on temporary basis, he/she will be allowed of entry and then he/she might extend his/her permit to stay here.

BUT if the CBSA officer smells that this individual has any intention of staying in Canada awaiting for CIC´s decision, that is not a genuine visitor and as a result she/he will be refused of entry.

Remember, CBSA officers is not what they ask, it is the way HOW they ask and not what you respond, is HOW your respond.

Bill Common Sense perfect.

Many times it is when you say too much that gets persons into trouble at the border.

Listen to a politician speak about a subject and get two unconected people to put opposite spins on his/her comments. You will be shocked to see how easy it is to get opposing views from the same politicians comment.

Just do not go the opposite route with one word answers.
