What can you do for Canada ?

Subject: What can you do for Canada ?
On this forum, the vast majority of those who post are potential Immigrants, who want to come to my country, Canada.

The topics are centered around questions about the Immigration process, and how long it will take to be "approved " to come to Canada.

As someone whose family has been in Canada for just over 200 years ( the first members of my family arrived in 1801 from Ireland ) I have to ask this question.........

What can YOU do for Canada ? Are you prepared to commit to this country, to work hard and be a good citizen? Are you simply looking to make money, or are you the kind of person who we will glad to have in our country?

Being a sucessful Immigrant to Canada takes a whole range of skills and above all, a "good mental attitude " that sees this as the chance of a lifetime, to get ahead and make a great life for yourself and your kids. The most sucessful people see Immigration as a way to improve the future for their children.

So, instead of concentrating on what Canada will DO for you, tell me what YOU will do for Canada?

What have you/had you and your ancestor done to Canada? why did they immigrate to Canada in the first instance, whether on 1801 or 100 BC? Did they immigrate here to escape the Potato famine or what exactly was their reason?
"What can we do for Canada" , was this Q in your ancestors´ minds when they moved here?

Excellent response my relatives invented breakfast cereal after we had a horse thief in the London Ontario area the remaining cowards ran across the border to Battle Creek Michigan and created a Health Club. To feed the vegitarians they invented corn flakes but Post launched the product first.

SO WHAT.

Welcome all who wish to try to make a better life for themselves and their children.

If I come to Canada I will not harass and exploit the native Indian population nor give them diseases, kill them take away their land, rob their mineral resources and pollute their rich culture. I will treat them with respect and honor they deserve unlike the earlier immigrants.

The money I bring into Canada will help oil its economy and my skills if they are recognized will be put to good use if not I will be a highly qualified Canadian doing menial jobs and stay away from welfare, avoid drinking too much beer and watching ice hockey.

And I will not have holier than thou attitude and question others who come after me about their intent.

Do I have to say more??

Good to know you are proud of being a Canadian. But keep in mind citizens of other countries have their own pride too. I see your very invalid point when you said "Are you simply looking to make money, or are you the kind of person who we will glad to have in our country?". To answer this, I would like you to know that most if not all potential immigrants know that Canada is not waiting with open arms to give away bags of money to the new immigrants. If you look at history you will note that immigrants play a major role in the development of a country. Immigrants work harder, more number of hours than the locals, immigrants are more law-abiding citizens, polite and willing to give more than attempting to take away. Now dont give me examples of some mexican immigrants in the US or some Pakistanis, or others who commit crime - they are exceptions and they cannot be used as examples.
However, your point is well taken - immigrants go to another country to find better opportunities for themselves and hopefully their children.

Regarding what immigrants give to Canada - I am sure you know that Immigrants go through excruciating process of having to prove a good education, well achieved work experience, lack of criminal history, lots of fees, good health, language ability and enough financial resources to name a few; to be able to immigrate to Canada. However, things change once they land! Their work experience, which was necessary to immigrate; is seen as crap, and they are forced to work as security guards, pizza delivery guys and taxi drivers. This is also why a lot of people ask what Canada is likely to give them. Before promising heavens on earth, Canada should have a policy of recognizing experience gained in other countries and create more respectable jobs for its citizens and immigrants so the immigrants get what they expect. Then they will definitely give more than Canada will give them.

First you answered your own question and then asked the same here - " The most sucessful people see Immigration as a way to improve the future for their children.

So, instead of concentrating on what Canada will DO for you, tell me what YOU will do for Canada?"

This simply means that immigrants are looking into what Canada can give them so they can make their childrens´ lives better.

However, the long history tell us that immigrants are always beneficial for the country itself as much as their new country is for them.

Being a successful immigrant means logically being a successful person.

Successful economy makes bright future and usually made by those who spent their efforts and skills for it.
So skills along with hard attempts will be the great present of all immigrants to Canada.

Don?t you think it?s quite sufficient??

I think its a process, human beings in general are selfish and they move to the place where there are more oportunities, People who have migrated to Canada 100 years back came here for better life than their native country and over a period of time they felt committed to the new land, same with new immigrants, after coming here and making a good living , they start to fall in love with land and feel Canadians by heart,

Yes definately , I love Canada for the freedom, equality , law and order and great quality of life it has to offer , so I made this decision to immigrate.

And I respect all those who came here and built this great country , Oh Canada !!!

I am second generation Canadian on one side, 5th on the other. One side of the family came to Canada to escape religious persecution. The other side came because their world was at war.

In both cases, the first generation did not gain much - they worked hard - one as a potato farmer in PEI and the other as a homesteader in Saskatchewan in a field that was supposed to be farmland but ended up full of rocks.

Without a doubt, on my Mom´s side - it was the second generation that truly found the benefit. Going back home was never an option for my Grandfather. living in Canada just long enough to gain benefits or using Canada to get into the US was never a discussion.

Grandpa had several careers - some were better than others. In the end, he saw the potential in using logs for building materials instead of furnace fuel and used every last dollar the family had to buy a little mill on the Fraser river. It employed people, it helped hundreds of immigrants support themselves once they arrived, it helped build a church that is still standing, it gave summer jobs to 12 grandchildren and it seeded my own economic future.

The other side... well the family was more aristocratic, and had their own furniture business but it never ended up leaving much of a legacy. However, it has left me a tremendous love and respect for the country where I live. It also makes me protective.

My former in-laws came to Canada in 1948 after walking from Russia to Germany to escape the war. He was a wealthy blacksmith but never practiced his trade in Canada. He did everything from building the dikes in Sumas to drywalling, to selling suits at Sears, to running a small business which we later bought and ran for more years than I wish to admit. He died with 5 kids who attended university and enough money to own 5 rental properties that provided him a very nice pension.

I understand Canadian Citizens feelings very well. I often struggle with them myself.

We are looking for social, cultural, and economic partners in our country - those who will work, employ, attend parent teacher night, sponsor the local baseball team, join the library foundation, attend the symphony, volunteer, share their culture, share their world experience and world view... consider Canada HOME.

It is difficult to listen quietly when Canada is the subject of temporary wealth accumulation or a stepping stone to somewhere we don´t have a lot of respect for. We are a country of the hardy and the resourceful. Never before have people come with a shopping list of deliverables like we see now - and it is hard to listen to.

So, please understand - if you can, that we are not bad people... just protective people. We are protecting a society that has provided our families with hope, a future and success - nothing more.

My desire to move to Canada is for the social system that America is lacking. I not only want to contribute to Canadian society, but feel part of a greater social order and good. The extreme individualism, materialism, and Darwinism in America is not for me. These things I found moderated in Canada be the sense of community not found south of the border.

These reasons, I feel, are sufficient for me and others who may share.

Hey Roy, sorry to hear about the cornflakes! Wondered if the last name had any connections.

just so you don´t feel so bad... my father in law was offered the North American patent for Velcro. He thought it would never be useful for anything and turned it down. He said many bad words every time he helped his grandkids with their shoes :)

Richard, People like you are the reason we still say ´welcome to Canada´.

I am 100% agreed (human beings in general are selfish). We are in civilized world and every one has right to spend quality of life and looking for better prospects and future. For that if move from one country to another is not a crime or sin. Immigration is not a new phenomenon.

Canada has been ranked by United Nations as having achieved the highest quality of life of any country in the world. What else is required for justification?

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
