Subject: vancouver, boring or not?
is it just me but is vancouver boring, ive been here for nearly a year now, came over from europe for work reasons, and im finding it difficult to "enjoy" myself?
no decent pubs, rude people everywhere, you cant move downtown or eastend without being asked for money by homeless/drug addicts.
you have to tip for just about everything!
i was in a bar last week and the waitress came up and said shes finishing her shift soon would we mind settling up before she finishes and someone else will then look after us, basicly, "I want my tip"
i would like o know if all of canada is like his,
i.e is toronto more european or montreal?

Sorry you are not enjoying yourself. Did you go to the dragon boat races, or the Jazz festival, or the triathlon, or did you go running on the sea wall, or skiing or bike riding? Bars are boring whether they are in Montreal, London or Hong Kong.

bar staff must close out their cash at the end of the shift - it´s unfortunate you presume she is looking for her tip.

Montreal is more European that Toronto or Vancouver.

Bars and pubs are extremely "negative power places" where crimes and voilence take place or planned instantly. It cannot be a pleasent atmosphere where ever in this world and comparable with common nature!

Bo:

As others have said here, it is up TO YOU, to find things to do in Vancouver. Read the papers to see what is on each week end. Join a club that does outdoors stuff, get out of the bar and DO something.

You from the UK ? Sounds like it to me .

I think these "features" exists in any big city. My former city (Chicago) had homeless constantly panhandling in the Loop. But everyone just got used to it. The city, though, was never boring, with a lakefront park system the envy of other cities. With a population of 9 million, people (surprisingly) tended to be nice and polite with each other.

I´m surprised to hear of rudeness in Vancouver, as my experience in Canada (Ontario) has been of consistently polite and helpful people. But I´ve heard Vancouver has a bit of the new frontier wild side, unlike San Francisco in its heyday.

I must confess Vancouver is feeling very grumpy at the moment. Housing is becoming less affordable by the day, we are living with the city cut in half by rapid transit construction that is making driving an absolute horror. We have had far to much rain this year for our liking, and we can´t find enough workers to fill our jobs - which is making us all work far too hard for far too many hours every day.

And...it is welfare week and a full moon.

We all need a holiday. :)

I´d have to agree with Bo there, Vancouver is a tad bit boring. Unless you are into individualistic outdoor pursuits like skiing, biking, running then you really won´t enjoy Vancouver that much. Take away the great outdoors and Vancouver does not have much to offer in terms of quality cultural pursuits, think of any rainy day in winter when there´s no snow on the mountains, those are the boring vancouver days.

I moved here from Ireland last year and am thinking about moving on again in a year or so. I enjoy my outdoor pursuits my running, my football (which weirdly enough is not played in the winter here, people are too lazy here when the weather gets bad) but there is no ´buzz´ about Vancouver, i can´t really put my finger on it, no joie de vive. Don´t get me wrong, Vancouver is beautiful and I love the qaulity of restuarants and bars but its just lacking a soulful spark, am element of danger almost, Vancouver is too safe.

"Bars and pubs are extremely "negative power places" where crimes and voilence (sic) take place or planned instantly." JP WTF are you talking about here, its seems to me Vancouverites just don´t know how to socialise in normal settings that most of the world already enjoy. To Vancouverites socialising means smalltalk which is a rudeness most Europeans abhor, I have lived here a year and know nothing about my aacquitances and so called ´friends´. If Vancouverites took the time to stop flying around doing activities and actually sit and talk to other people then Vancouver would be much friendlier place.

Is Vancouver Boring (in reply to: vancouver, boring or not?)
I moved to Vancouver a few months ago from eastern canada where I´ve lived all my life and I must agree in part about this discussion about Vancouver and its lack of cultural and social elements. The Vancouverites are, based on my experience, pretty soulless and dull. There are too many people with a lot of money and nothing to do with it. They drive around in their Mercedes Benz´s, wandering aimlessly with their money. Conversely, there are a ton of homeless, drug addicts, homeless drug addicts, mentally-ill drug addicts and so on and so fourth! They´re all pretty pathetic and really are too weak and/or disoriented to hurt you so I wouldn´t really worry about it. To some people it´s sick or whatever but they don´t affect me. I must say though that most of the people I´ve met in Vancouver from places other than BC are very cool. I love it here for its freedoms (ie. weed), its natural beauty, warmth (on a heat wave right now!!), and laid back attitude but Vancouver needs something. It´s almost like everyone is going through the motions of life. Maybe all the Vancouverites should leave and everyone who likes to live life come in!

Regarding impatience from Vancouver wait staff at shift-end, I think this is pretty common in most big cities. But the most rudeness I´ve found has usually been in Germany, where just about everything out of the norm is "verboten!". But I got used to that in travels there and just smile back.

I know this is about Canada, but if looking for excitement I recommend Chicago. Current lakefront festival in progress with the city´s ethnic groups serving variety of cuisine and entertainment. One of the most beautiful city lakefronts in the world I might add. Home of the Blues and many jazz clubs.

Proud of hometown, but nevertheless still Canada-bound.
