Subject: Public School in Canada
I have immigration visa for Canada. I am planning to go and settle in or around Toranto. Because of my current responsibilities in my home country (Bangladesh)I cannot leave before Janurary 2008.

I have two children one in Grade 5 and the other has just concluded O´Level examinations. I am told by some of my friends that since I am going to Canada in the middle of the schooling year my children would have to wait till September 2008 before they can attend school.

I need correct information about admission policy in Canada. If required I would drop everything in Bangladesh to ensure that the childrens can start school on time and do not wait for new school year.

I would appreciate if someone can give me the correct answer or direct me to the right web site.

With thanks in advance.

Enroll kids in school as soon as you arrive (in reply to: Public School in Canada)
Hello:

Canadian schools are used to having " New Immigrant Kids " show up every week/month, so they will accept your children, providing you are in Canada legally, as soon as you take them to the local schools.

You will need to show your Immigration paperwork,at the school, to establish that the family is in Canada with proper Government permission, and also show that both the children are "up to date " with their medical injections against childhood diseases, such a measles, mumps and diptheria.

The older child will be attending a high school, while the younger one will be in a elementary school, so they will not attend school together.

This practice applies right across Canada. We would NEVER hold a child back a year, simply to satisfy some form of regulation. Education in Canada is VERY important and we do everything that we can to help kids to be happy and enjoy their education eperience.

in theory, CC is correct. However, if the school is at maximum enrollment when you arrive after September, you may have to attend somewhere less convenient.

this happened to some recent immigrant friends of mine. I helped them locate an apartment within walking distance of the highschool. It was October. When they went to enroll they were told ´sorry, we are fully enrolled here you will have to try at a different school´ Had they enrolled before September, the situation would have been much different. Even at the alternate school, some classes she wanted were at capacity and she could not get in.

Age vs Grade, Psychological Problems for immigrant Children (in reply to: Public School in Canada)
Hi
I am a new immigrant from Pakistan settled in Brampton two weeks ago. Back in Pakistan my two daughters (born 2003 and 2004) has completed grade 4 and grade 2 and were promoted to next grades in July 2011.(both of them had enrolled in school at the age of 2.5 years), both were studying in one of the best available school system in Pakistan (Beacon House School System) where both of them were position holders in their classes. Both of them have a very good communication as well as reading and writing skills in English.
The staff at ´Welcome Canada´ has guided us to ´Ridgeview Elementary School´ Brampton; where my daughters were enrolled in Grade 3 and 2 according to their age as per law of the ´Peel District School Board´, my kids will have to again appear to the ´Welcome Canada´ on Sep 20th, 2011, where an assessment will be made about their grades.
My both kids are very much disturbed, even became psychologically ill, due to their degradation. They feel that they are far much step ahead as compared to their classmates here, after attending the school for few days, and they should be in higher grades. And if this is not possible then we should return to Pakistan.

My question is
Is there any possibility, by appealing to ´Peel District School Board´ or any other method/procedure, that my daughters can be enrolled in higher grades. Is the Age vs Grade law so rigid that kids will become psycologically ill. Is there no advantage for the kids with extra talents and intellect.

Please guide me

Even my Canadian friends say that Canadian Public Schools have low quality of education. They have to put their children in private schools which cost about $10-$15k/year. Canadian Public Schools do not encourage students to continue their education to a higher level and have similar outdated curriculum like the Americans do.

Hello Asan (in reply to: Public School in Canada)
Sorry to hear about your story. This is a terrible impact on the psyque of your children. I have a friend from Bangladesh that was told that her child would never be able to get into a Canadian University ( this was underlined predjudice). Today the child has graduaded from one of the best Universities in the country. Don´t give up, becuase retardation is a common cutural trait in Canada.
