Subject: Why should what is earned just vanish.
Just a general question: Not that you are obliged to answer, just thought I´d give it a shot, it seemed more forthright, that attempting responses from the Government itself. I immigrated to Canada from the US back in 1976, lived and worked there for 12 years on a permanent basis. Still visit there, pretty much every year. Have never had any difficulty crossing borders or staying. Do I, or have I, maintained my Landed Immigrant Status there? Or does this status somehow become forfeited over the Course of time? The reason I´m asking, is not to retrieve long ago accumulated benefits: It´s more like I´m going to BC, where I initially immigrated too, to see relatives and friends, and to play some tennis. One of the tournaments require that I be a citizen, or hold some status, I mentioned I was at one time a Landed Immigrant, he said if I could verify this, I could enter the tournament. I know, not much substance to warrant so much effort, he that´s just the way it is.... If you could help me with this inquiry that would be great. Thanks Very Much Brant Kelsey

You have no status now in Canada. (in reply to: Why should what is earned just vanish.)
Sorry but you have no Immigration status in Canada now. In order to maintain that Landed Immigrant status you must live in and pay taxes , in Canada, on a on-going basis.

Being out of Canafda for five years or more will nullify your status as a Immigrant here.

So my Status and all that attended it have vanished? (in reply to: Why should what is earned just vanish.)
For the sake of argument, then, all the taxes paiod while working, and any benefits accrued would also be forfeited? These then innure to government coffers? I suppose I can derive some satisfaction as having participated in this great experiment. Brant

Brant it is true you will have forfeited all benefits that were government-originated (like Canada Pension and so forth if you lose the status). But if it is any comfort, know that it is the same in the US too. I used to be a PR in the US just a few years ago and lost it because of protracted absence from the US (US requires the PRs to return to the US EVERY YEAR for a designated length of time, or else!). I contributed to social security, unemployment benefits and so forth all that time (nearly 15 years) and all is flushed down, except the contributions to TIAA-CREF (this is a retirement plan). I continue to contribute to TIAA-CREF from Canada and presently fighting Canadian system for exemption from CPP plans (my TIAA-CREF is much more robust and lot larger). Anyways, I do advise you to investigate, through Canadian Goverment agencies, if you can keep or claim any of the contributions. I sued the US Govt to get my contributions to Social Security (which were nearly a 100 grand) but failed. I now know that such contributions are clearly ´lost´ unless I find a way to revive my PR in the US when I am eligible to retire. I wonder if you could do the same in Canada and claim your contributions or benefits thereof at some appropriate time! Good luck in your endeavors.
