Subject: Background Check
  Hi, quick question.

My husband is American, and we´re sponsoring him while he lives in the US. He was convicted of a misdemeanor offence; however, although he told the Canadian gov´t about it, it doesn´t even show on records because it was a minor offence that he did community service for and it was like 20 years ago. Also, he has been members of about 20 non-violent human rights campaigns in the US since he was 18. We were wondering if we should expect his background check to be lengthy? How long does it normally take?

Thanks.

The time it takes is really dependant on how many different states he has lived in, in his time in the USA, as each state has to "sign off on his records/no record in that state". So as you can see it may take a number of months to be completed. If, on the other hand he only lived in one state, it will take lees time .

His having been involved in human rights groups is not relevant to his criminal record, which is the important factor to the Canadian Immigration service. His finacial history is important, as having declared bankruptcy in the USA may be a resaon to be denied entry to Canada

Got The Police Clearances... (in reply to: Background Check)
We´ve got his criminal record information (police clearances) back already, sent them in with the application... but I was under the impression that there is also a seperate security background check that they do on applicants that looks at their involvement with political organizations and such?

Thanks!
