I know that we have to spend 3 of the first 5 years in Canada to get citizenship. What I am confused about is-

Does the 5 years begin the date that you get your PR visa or the date on which you land in Canada?

date you land, and you must prove residency during those 3 years.

Is it ok to land and go out of canada for say 1 year. then return to canada after 1 year and stay for 3 years in canada. Would that qualify for canada citizenship?

can I ask a really dumb question...

do you want to make a future in Canada or do you want to do as little as possible to gain Canadian citizenship?

Do not be surprised if the citizenship rules change very soon. Canadians are getting very tire of people who think as you do.

If I sound annoyed, it is because I am.

To get Canadian citizenship after PR you have to reside in Canada for 3 out of 4 years preceding the date you submit the citizenship application. You do not become PR till you land in Canada.

I'll second that emotion. (in reply to: No. of years)
I too take great exception to Immigrants who are unwilling to really commit to Canada, by actually living here. I get really annoyed with people who treat MY country as some kind of pit stop on their way to someplace else, like the USA.

As Sharon said, I wouldn´t be surprised to see a major overhual of the Canadian Citizenship Act, by our Parliament, to make changes to the requirments, by for instance, doubling the time period to six years and removing the " time out of Canada " clause entirely. AS it is, the requirements are way too low and too easy.

For all of you out there who are in the application process, remember that the people of Canada are getting more and more upset with the way that Immigrants are abusing our system, and looking for any way around the regulations. A reform is overdue.

I think the reforms may go even further. Here is my suggestion...

If a non-native born citizen is out of the country for more than 2 years, (unless it is because they are working overseas for a Canadian based company) and there is no residency in Canada for that time, then they should be forced to forfeit their Canadian passport.

The Lebanon fiasco really got people ticked.

if you want people to live in canada, then atleast provide them with job good enough to do their groceries. It is a dark truth-- there are NO jobs in canada - what do you want aliens to do in canada then -- keep living in canada even if that means shelters??

Please think with an open mind and not just try to confine people in shelters.

IF YOU HAVE A BIRD IN A CAGE, SET IT FREE
IF IT COMES BACK, ITS YOURS
IF IT DOSEN´t, IT NEVER WAS.

Hope that clears things up.

You can´t grant someone citizenship and then say "HAY! You are not a Canadian born citizen. So if you spend more then 2 years of of Canada we will revoke your Citizenship! But if your Canadian born do as you like!" Thats saying people who are born in another country are second class citizen!

However if someone is a dual citizen ( from Lebanon for example ) and they are in Lebanon when $hit happens like last year. They shouldn´t be helped and evacuated at the exspense of Canada as they are a citizen of that country.

No jobs in Canada? Nonsense. (in reply to: No. of years)
To the person who stated above that there are NO JOBS IN CANADA. I challenge you to PROVE what you claim.

Of course you cannot, as your statement is completely false.

The facts of the matter are far different, my friend.

In fact, Canadian companies are spending lots of money going to OTHER countries ( like the UK and France ) to hold job fairs to RECRUIT people to come to Canada to fill positions in their companies. Does that sound like there are NO JOBS to be filled in Canada? No it doesn´t.

The problem that I see is that many Immigrants are not willing to "go where the jobs are " in Canada.

They all seem to want to live in Vancouver or Toronto, while the best paying and most easilly obtained jobs are in isolated places like northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories, where even a truck driving job pays over a hundred thousand dollars a year, if you stay and work the full 12 months contract period.

Of course that is beneath many of the "professional Immigrants" who would rather stay unemployed in a big city.

Canada does NOT owe anybody a job, including Immigrants with high levels of education. If they are so well educated, I would think that they would be capable of doing proper pre-arrival job searches, and use the Graduate office at their home University to contact Graduates of that University to ask for advice and assistance, who are now living and working in Canada.

It´s called using the "Old Boys Network ".

I´d rather see Immigrants to Canada who are willing to get their hands dirty, than those who imagine themselves to be "above all that ". I have more respect for the ones who are willing to work at becoming a Canadian citizen, by helping us to build this country, as many generations before have done.

Sometimes I get the feeling that current Imgigrants forget that Canada was built/developed over a period of 400 years. It didn;t just spring out of the ground last week, it took many generations of us Canadians to build it, to create what it is now, a modern and peacefull nation.

As I have said in the past here.......what will YOU bring to Canada, that will help us to make this a better country?

As a Canadian, I don´t hold any other passport, so I have a big vested interest in how this country moves ahead. I don´t have the luxury of "going home " if things don´t work out for you, and you don´t "pull your own weight " in Canada. That is why some of us on this site are so insistent that Immigrants to Canada be honest and fair in their actions re the Immigration process.

Finally, jobs are available in Canada for those who "want to work " . But even many of us who were born in Canada are moving across the country to get them. One example would be the Newfoundlanders who are working in Alberta now. Why should it be any different for an Immigrant to Canada?

Jim Bunting. Toronto.
