Subject: Getting out of US with expired passport
I am a Canadian citizen currently residing in the US. My Canadian passport expired in May 2007. I sent my application for renewal 3 months ago and they have JUST told me that my application was rejected.

I need to travel to Hong Kong in 3 weeks and I don´t think that´s enough time to obtain a new one.

Would the airline still let me board the plane with my expired passport, provided that I´ll renew it when I´m in Hong Kong? My parents were born in Hong Kong so I have valid documents to enter Hong Kong without my Canadian passport.

In general anybody flying in international flights (except within US/Canada) airlines don´t board the passenger without valid passport.

You may call your airline.

Rejected? Not possible. (in reply to: Getting out of US with expired passport)
Something is very fishy here.

Once you are a Canadian citizen, you are one " for life ". To renew a Canadian passport, you do have to fill out an application to get a new one. BUT being "REJECTED" is just not possible.

Unless your original passport was a "phoney one ". Is that the case?

In any case, an "expired passport " is not worth anything. It is worthless and cannot be used to go anywhere.

They rejected my application because of the "reflections on my eyeglasses" in my photos. However, you can see my eyes perfectly and I have to use a magnifying glass to find where those mentioned "reflections" were. And it took them 3 WHOLE MONTHS to realize that.

Thanks for all your replies! Are any of you familiar with the expedited service when you apply in person?

Passport photos are to be NO Glasses. (in reply to: Getting out of US with expired passport)
If you had read the Canadian Passport application information carefully , you would KNOW that eye glasses are NOT to be worn in the photos.

That is WHY your application was rejected. Blame your self for not following the instructions properly , not the passport office.

I DID read the instructions. And it says that "Glasses may be worn as long as the eyes are clearly visible", which by the way they were.

I do not need someone to be condescending right now. Thank you very much.

JY,

You said you are in the US now, did you apply through any Canadian consulate?

If so then I would be worried as they took 3 months to reject your application.

You may visit them in person or call; http://geo.international.gc.ca/can-am/washington/offices/default-en.asp. Probably you already know this. I know that currently passport processing is also very slow within Canada, but if you show them trabel ticket then you can have the expedite service at higher cost. Similar thing should be also in the US. Read Here:"
Urgent services are available, on a case-by-case basis, for emergency or compassionate reasons. Please contact the nearest Canadian Government Office to ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements." You are right, their usual processing time is 15 weeks! I should be careful also. Thanks for sharing, otherwise I wouldn´t know this.

So I think you still have hope. Try it, call them and explain.

Dear JY RELAX

Go to the Canadian Consulate in Hong Kong and get a one time emergency travel document or a new PPT. and fly home to Canada.

Come on people how many PR´s who have a death or serious illness, accident in the family fly home to deal with a relative and have no PR card?

How do you think they get back to Canada. Common sense has to prevail especially with this new PPT requirement caused by the American´s the back log is immense.

Roy,

His situation is not travelling without PR card. It is totally different. He has an expired passport, and without a valid pp airlines even won´t let him to board into any international flight.

As far as I searched he can apply for the expedite pp by explaining his urgency, booked air ticket.

Before someone challenges me on this I´ll add that my neighbour across the road a Jamaican flew home to bury a parent without a PR card and at least ten potential client´s who were all pro bono flew home and back without PR cards.

Your a Citizen go to the counsellor section of the consulate and demand your rights they will be happy to take care of your concerns. The Visa Post staff have been there heard that before JY.

There are no exit requirements in the States. He has a card which will allow him to fly to Hong Kong and entry into Hong Kong. Airline will let him board.

I said and I quote "Go to the Canadian Consulate in Hong Kong and get a one time emergency travel document or a new PPT. and fly home to Canada".

Postings rarely give enough information but this person stated clearly.
1. I am a Canadian citizen currently residing in the US.
2. My parents were born in Hong Kong so I have valid documents to enter Hong Kong without my Canadian passport.
3. Would the airline still let me board the plane with my expired passport, provided that I?ll renew it when I?m in Hong Kong?

I TAKE NUMBER THREE TO BE WOULD THE AIRLINE ALLOW ME TO BOARD THE PLANE WITH AN EXPIRED PPT. ANY AIRLINE WILL ALLOW YOU TO BOARD ANY FLIGHT AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A DOCUMENT THAT WILL ALLOW YOU ENTRY UPON ARRIVAL.

Permanent Residents without a PR card have no right to return on the return portion of their flight but as long as they are authorized to enter a country they will be allowed to travel to said country. Then to get back on the plane to Canada they need a special visa or a PR card or a Canadian PPT to prove the airline will not be held accountable.

People flying into Hong Kong have a card to enter Hong Kong and many have come to Canada gotten landed and got back the next day with these HONG KONG cards. Then when they return there is no evidence to how long they have stayed out of the Canada.

I´m not wrong been in the business too long to know that no PPT is needed to enter Hong Kong or board a direct flight to Hong Kong.

CONFIRM MY COMMENT BY CALLING A AIRLINE THAT FLIES DIRECT TO HONG KONG
