Subject: US green card after applying for Canadian Perm Res
  Hi All,

I am on OPT status with 3.5 years years of work experience from prior to doing my Masters in US. I was thinking of applying for Canadian green card this year and for US green card next year after I get my H1B.

Is that possible ? Will there be any problems ? Am I missing some technical details ?

Please let me know.

Thanks,
Ankur

Why do you want both US greencard and Canadian permanent residence (there is no such thing as "Canadian green card")
Immigration is meant to be about making a new home - not abusing residency laws for your own Convenience. people are waiting YEARS to get into Canada because dickheads line you are using it as a Convenient base from Which to Commute and work in the states from. If you have no Intention of living in Canada permanently Sod off and leave the visas for those Who do.

The people who are waiting years to get into canada -- those very people, if givel the opportunity will do the same as ankur above. It just a matter of migrating to greener pastures. Migration is not the same as marriage. Migration is for -- better pay -- better jobs -- better lifestyle -- if canada can surpass usa in these aspects, then no one will move from canada to usa-- rather people will move from usa to canada. But presently, things are just the opposite.

US green card, Canadian Perm Res (in reply to: US green card after applying for Canadian Perm Res)
Hey Thanks for the candid reply and for supporting me out!!!

But what about my question? Does GC process in US have any bearing on whether I have a Perm Res application pending in Canada ?

Thanks,
Ankur

canada immigration = us green card
canada citizenship = us citizenship.

I´m not sure if you can apply for us green card at the same time as application for canada immigration is pending. But this is just my wild guess..please check with someone like ..sharon/roy on this forum -- hey guys, please comment.

You can apply for both, as far as I know there is no law forbidding that.

You can apply for both. Right.

BUT, I don´t know about Canadian PR rule, but know that in USA, you can retain GC with Canadian or any other country PR both at the same time. If you are caught by any chance, then your GC will be immediately cancelled and you will be deported.

Last year a lady unknowingly was a victim of this. She had both GC and PR. She was entering USA from Canada. She told US immigration that she had both. Then US official asked, what is your current resident then? She unmindfully replied Canada. US official then instantly cancelled her GC and send back to Canada.

A knee jerk reaction comes from some people the moment they hear a prospective Canadian PR or a Canadian PR holder is looking for options. What is the big deal? As long as it is a legal option, why name calling? A lots of Canadian citizen including the ones who were borne in Canada cross the southern boarder in search of things that matter them. In the new world of dual citizenship and multiple loyalties, some people really need to wake up and look around before calling names.

Hey Departed_Canadian,

You mentioned that "in USA, you can retain GC with Canadian or any other country PR both at the same time.". Then why was that lady´s GC cancelled? Wasen´t that illegal on USA immigration´s part??

Does it mean that USA allows -- "if a person has both GC and canadian PR, then the person must be currently living in USA only and not in canada"??

Last Anonymous, sorry for the confusion; it should be in USA you CANNOT. USA doesn´t allow it´s GC holders to have PR of another country.
