Make sure thre movers have Canadian permits (in reply to: Moving truck rentals)
If you decide to use a United States based moving company, make SURE that they have Canadian permits, to operate IN Canada. Many US registered moving companies do NOT hace either permits from the Canadian Provinces, nor proper insurance to cross the Intermational border, into Canada. Ask to SEE their Canadian permits before you sign a contract with them.

If you decide to use a rental truck , and drive it yourself, be very carefull. The U -Haul truck rental company has a really bad record for safety of their trucks. Many have had their plates removed here in Canada, for being un-safe. I´d suggest Penske, or National, or Hertz, for a one way truck rental to Canada. Remember that you will only pay for a one way rental ,and you can drop off the truck at a location in Toronto.

Good luck.

Above may be true, but I could only find one company that offered rental moving equipment from U.S. to Canada. That was U-Haul. Penske and Budget did not allow their equipment to cross the border.

My experience with U-Haul was quite good, albeit with their trailers only. Prices were very good, but one has to check their internet rates often as they fluctuate daily based on equipment availability, supply, and demand.

Thanks again for the advices and information. i have received quote from u-haul for about $750 truck rental and $130 for towing my car; with gas cost i am assuming around $1200 the total moving cost from Boston to Toronto.

Richard look at this CTV news story (in reply to: Moving truck rentals)
Richrad:

Take a look at this recent CTV tv news story about U-Hual in Ontario. The OPP has conducted a safety blitz on the U -Hual fleet and found they have a safety record that is five times worse than th industry standard rate.

Go here to read the story;

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2006/11/03/uhaul-ontario.html

That was what I based my comments on.

Thanks, Jim. Interesting and shocking report, which I didn´t catch before. Would make me think twice about U-Haul again.

Interesting that no such investigation stateside, but then that shouldn´t be surprising as it´s a market free-for-all atmosphere there.

Canadian trucks are much safer than US registerd ones (in reply to: Moving truck rentals)
Richard:

In one of my forner lives, I was a owner/operator for a Ontario based Expedite freight company, with my own one ton Ford E350 van carryiing "high value " goods into the lower 48 states. Because my van was under 10,000 lbs gross weight, I didn´t have to stop at state scale houses and I didn´t have to keep a "drivers log book " of my hours on duty. What I did do was read the annual ICC reports about the results of safety checks in the states.

Canadian registered commercial trucks had a far better safety record, in the USA than the American trucks did. The "taken out of service, for safety reasons " ratio was 25 American trucks for every Canadian one, that was taken off the road by state DOT inspectors.

Why? Canada has a much more strict national policy about commercial truck safety, than the USA does. The U-Hual story is ongoing here in Ontario, and their ability to do business in Canada is hanging by a thread.

I have 2 personal friends who are MTO safety inspectors, and they tell me that they are doing at least 2 days out of every week stopping rental moving trucks, to do safety checks, including U Hual trucks.

They also stop, and inspect American based tour buses, and those vehicles also have a high failure rate.

I have personally seen a Ohio tour bus have it´s plates removed in downtown Toronto, by MTO inspectors, for having only one working rear air brake, and corroded air lines on all the brakes, front and rear. They have to be repaired and re-inspected by MTO before they can be driven again, and the company name is placed on the MTO computer as a risk for future inspections in Ontario.

Jim,
Regarding david and the other post. I see now where you´re coming from with his claim for refugee status yet owning a business. Sorry, didn´t mean to side-swipe you with my comment, as was a general observation.

Your above post describing your freight company experience is excellent and provides much insight in the regulatory differences between Canada ands U.S. Thanks for providing this info.
