Subject: Common Law Application (how invasive are they?)
I?m Canadian and my common-law partner is American. We?re about to apply for permanent residency for her under the common-law class. My question is, the form I have to fill out asks for my parents name; address; phone number.

Do you know if they will contact them?

The reason I ask is this: We are both female and my parents are not pleased about this. They still think I will find the perfect man. I?m worried if they?re contacted they?ll not give a very positive review. Anyone know if they?ll be contacted?

Thanks for any help you?re able to provide.

Why not get legally married in Canada? (in reply to: Common Law Application (how invasive are they?))
Samantha:

Why not get legally married, in Canada? That would certainly improve the situation, from a legal point of view, and also from the Immigration side of things, as well.

The need for the details about your family is to establish that you are really who you say you are. Can´t be too carefull these days, with so much "identity fraud ". Your parents are not going to be able to stop you applying . Their opinion is unimportant. I´m assuming that the two of you are older than the age of majority, which is 18 ? If so fill your boots . Grin.

thanks (in reply to: Common Law Application (how invasive are they?))
Thanks for the quick response Jim.

Yes, we are both of age. So they will contact my parents basically to verify I´m who I say I am - not to valid our relationship. That makes me feel somewhat better.

Have been trying to find someone that has been thru this situation. Am glad to have finally found this site!

You are welcome. (in reply to: Common Law Application (how invasive are they?))
Samantha:

The identity check is standard procedure nowadays.

If the two of you get married in a Canadian Province that allows it, that will make your Immigration case that much stronger. It would allow you to sponsor your American spouse into Canada. Still takes time, but not as long as other routes/ paths.

Consider it.

Samantha,

Prepare a file which leaves no room for doubts. Provide ample proof of your relationship; include everything that you have. Its quite unlikely that your parents will get a call from CIC inquiring about your relationship.
