Subject: Typing mistake after IA - what to do ?
I am so worried that I made this mistake on my SW application.

In the form when you have to type all the addresses you have live since the age of 18, for one country I was on vacation for 1 month and by mistake I put one year (which does not match the rest). It is a just a digit in the year that I mistyped so it made one year but it was one month in fact!

Now I got my IA and they asked me a police clearance certificate for that country but it was MY TYPING MISTAKE that I missed when I sent the application. Obviously I cannot provide a PCC for a country where I was not even a resident. It is 100% my mistake.

Can I just send them a letter explaining my typing mistake ? Is that acceptable ? Will they think I am trying to avoid paperwork and lying ... I feel so ashamed of myself that I mistyped a number. I am sure it happens to many others.

What it is best to do ? Pleaaaaaaaaaaaase advice, will they accept just a letter with a my apologizes ? They are asking me RPRF and medical so I assumed everything should be ok right ?

Very worried that I screwed up everything. Thanks for helping

Tell the truth. This is the best that can be done. As long as your mistake had no effect on assesment of your file (so that your application would get the same points if mistake was not there).

Also, it would be a good idea to note proof that you are not lying (such as stamps in your passports with dates entering and leaving the country).

However, I am not expert on the issue. The only thing that I know is true: it is a very bad idea to lie. Admit the mistake, apoligize and preferably give proof.

1. Fill out a new form
2. Explain the mistake you made in the form and how you came to know of it.
3. Show proof that you only stayed for a month in that country.

You do not have a major issue. Be honest and you will be fine.

Hi thanks Nikolai and Samm

I am from Europe and I stayed one month in another European country there is NO STAMP of passport and no record that I was there ... it was only a vacation.

Yes agree with you. I plan to fill out a new form and show the corrected portion. By mistake I typed "1998" instead of "1997" that is all.

I don´t know what will happen if they don´t believe me. That is why I am so worried. I can´t ask a PCC for that country as I was never a resident there.

Are there any bille you have paid while you have been in your country, etc? If you show proof that you were physically in your home country, everything will be a lot easier. Say, phone bills, rent you have paid, credit cards you have used, etc.

Ok let me tell you more details.
I spent one month on vacation from 08-1997 to 09-1997 then I started my Ph.D in UK in 10-1997 until 2000 but by mistake I wrote for my vacation 08-1997 to 09-1998 that is why they asked me PCC.

But in fact I went to UK just after that and enrolled as a student so perhaps I should show evidence that I was a student enrolled in UK but does not mean I was physically there.

I am going crazy this is just a silly typing mistake. They should have seen that there was a mismatch with my next line since I cannot be in two places at the same time.

What do you say ?

Oh, so your next line says something like
09-1997 - **-****

Basically, the way the form was filled, it meant that you were in two places at once. Well, that should make your case easier since what you wrote indeed would only come as a result of a typo :)

Just in case, send evidence of your enrollment alongside with the letter.

Show the transcripts for the stated period. And as Nikolai said include some bills you paid.

Try thinking of some other proof such as letter from your supervisor stating that you were a student under him at that time and were taking classes, letter from university stating that you were taking classes, etc.

They should have seen that but if we can make silly mistakes with one simple application can´t they make a few with tonnes of applications?

Relax, you will be fine.

Thanks Nikolai and Samm for responding to my post.

Yes you got it: the way the form was filled is that I was at two places at the same time since the next line start by 09/1997 so it should be obvious that it is a typo mistake.

I will follow your advice and am contacting my old University to get some proof that I was enrolled there.

I think the best according to your suggestions is to send the form again with the corrections and apologise for that. I can do that while sending the RPRF fees since they ask for it.

In the meantime I will get some proofs from my University and in case if they ask me I can get this ready. I think that should work. Still I wish I did not mistype this year number it is just ONE digit, so silly me!!.

Thanks a lot for your advice it helps me a lot!
