Subject: Why medical exam requireded for family NOT going
  Excellent forum, great people here.

Can anybody help here: Why medical exam is required for family members who do NOT want to immigrate to Canada?

I am the principale applicant of skilled worker. The soon-to-be 17 year old daughter of my husband was added to the list of his family members, but she is living with her mother, the ex-wife, who has the physical custody. The daughter will be going to college next year in the home country, and has NO intention to go to Canada. Now I received letter from the Immigration Service requesting medical exam for her.

Does that mean my step-daughter will be granted admission even though she was not included in our application? Even she were granted admission, she has no intention of going, at least for the coming years in college, which is far beyond the landing time allowed. She will have to apply again if she wants to go to Canada by then. What a hassel and waste!

Did I miss something here? Hard to reason it! Any way to avoid the medical exam for her? Medical exam is really expensive here, and don´t want make things complicated with the Ex if possible. Would a letter to the Immigration Service help?

To avoid the following scenario:

A family member with certain medical problems, call him "Tom", would make the family inadmissable for immigration.

Let´s say the family decides to apply for immigration without Tom. Canada approves them without requiring a medical exam on Tom, because he´s not coming. The family could later sponsor Tom at which time the medical problems would NOT be grounds for inadmissability. Different rules apply with sponsorships.

Submitting to a medical exam does not mean your step-daughter will be approved for immigration. It leaves open sponsorship in case she ever does want to immigrate to Canada.
