Why don´t you forward happier news like this Canadian lady who gave birth to quadruplets .... in the US because there was no more space in any Canadian neo-natal facilities ?

That made my day :)

Maybe no space, but Canada paid for the U.S. hospital care. I can´t imagine the U.S. government paying for anything for anyone who´s sick without insurance. And notice no one on the Canadian side needs to think about suicide.

That makes me feel good too. Sometimes you have to read the bad news too to understand what´s really going on.

That is really a sad story, all Americans must be feeling ashamed of this, being the most resourceful/pwerful country and their citizens have to commit suicide because of a basic human need.

As fas as I know that some states are adopting something similar system like Canada. Also, many poor low income people without insurance are taken care of by the state Govt.

Anyhow, I hope more Americans would speak out like Richard that may change this situation.

LOL,
Guys I think this is a ridiculous argument ! Consider my statements ....
1. IF you can afford medical care in the USA.... I think you are in a better situation than anywhere else in the world.

2. If you have no money to pay for medical insurance, then Canada maybe your best best !

The poor is poor everywhere, but if you want to equate the CNN article to every American, its pure foolishness. What that guy did was unimaginable and probably he falls under the 2nd category.

People who migrate in the skilled labor category usually are in a good position to afford the basic necessities, maybe some royal illness will make you pay out of your nose, but we can´t plan for such things, there may be hundreds of people with that illness in the USA, we need to find out if their spouses are also contemplating the same kinda actions.

In any case, I was wondering, and this is just for my benefit... whatever illness the lady was suffering from, does Canadian medical system cover every medical expense 100% no question asked no matter what the expense is, say 300k or 2 million dollars or is there an upper limit ?

Raj,

I certainly don´t like American healthcare system (just because of I´ve to pay something). still not a single time I consider Canada to settle just because of that. May be if I need to have dialisys or such highly expensive health attention then the case would be different.

That´s why to me, US paid healthcare is NOT A BIG DEAL. Though I believe it should be free and universal for greater interest.

Caandian system is 100% free, except eye, dental, and medicine, and 50$ for 911.

Free doesn´t mean also the best. Emegency waiting is very long, many Canadians have to go other countries because of that (see the link VBC333 posted). If I feel proud of a free healthcare which can´t warrant me timely treatment then what would I do with that? Then I´ve to vote for paid system which assures efficient & timely cure.

Raj and DC,

You guys make valid points, but a crucial factor is always missing in your arguments. That is - I´m ok therefore I like the American system. Those other people who are either poor, unskilled, between jobs, laid of, denied coverage - those are the "other" people and that´s their problem. So you´re really saying since I´m not one of them, the American system is "no big deal" to me and works well.

First, how can anyone feel ok that you have decent coverage while a huge chunk of your compatriots do not? I think this is where the individualistic system in the U.S. encourages this attitude of me as top priority in society. Thats´ why I like the Canadian system where everyone´s taken care of.

Secondly, you could easily become one of "them". If your company lays you off, you lose your health care insurance, and you get a catastrophic injury or illness, you could easily be in personal bankruptcy.

Richard, you took the words right out of my mouth. Sure the US is fine if you are not unemployed, a senior, on low income assistance, or have serious health issues.

A country shows its true colours when someone is in trouble and none of us are immune. Only fools think it could never happen to them.

Richard,

I don´t have any offense against what you have said. I already acknowledged you before, I´m being selfish in this issue to say "Not a Big Deal". Also agreed that for greater interest, I would prefer the Canadian system.

Also it is a valid point of facing the possibility of becoming one of them. So far I wasn´t close to this situation, don´t see in near future. But who knows? I only can pray to God.

I think Raj & I didn´t want to compare US Canada healthcare policies (we all agree that?). We rather try to assess how much we are affected by the capitalistic US healcare policy.

I was really amazed at the health care quality, after watch the
new movie Sicko. But as with Bush, americans screwed themeselves. They were given an option and they chose the wrong one. Hopefull this movie showed that it is time to change!
