| Subject: Will a simple civil wedding in canada help? |

Hi,
I am a Canadian in Taipei and am not married yet.
My fiance has a visa to canada which she obtained for business trips.
We will be going to visit Canada for some vacation time and for her to meet my friends.
We are thinking of getting our marriage license, doing a simple civil ceremony and then coming back to Taipei. At some later date we will have a "real wedding" in Taipei.
Will having a Canadian civil wedding be an advantage when it comes time to apply for immigration? Or will it be seen as a "fake" or "paper wedding"?

Wedding of any kind is considered wedding in Canadian immig law. Even living togather one full year is considered common law partner relationship. You need not worry. Just keep paper trail with you, should CIC refuses your application, it will help a lot to win appeal.
Make sure its your first marriage, you have clean record with immigration.

Is this the kind of advice you give your clients? no wonder people like you give the immigration servces business a bad name. A person can marry more than once, so why advice this person " make sure its your first marriage". It can be a 2nd or 3rd marriage, it does not matter, but they have to prove that the marriage is genuine and not for convenience for immigration.

We only had a simple Canadian civil wedding, but this was 16 years and 2 kids before our application. It´s not just the simplicity of the ceremony, but the timing that may be in question. As the previous post states, you may have to prove the marriage is genuine.
