Subject: Bringing car to Canada at final move
  We already have landed but are making the final move with all our belongings in a couple of weeks from Ohio, USA. We recently bought a new car and therefore it was not listed in the goods to follow list previously submitted when we had first landed. What I´d really appreciate learning is whether we will definitely have to pay the taxes and duties on this new, previously undeclared vehicle, which would be a considerable amount. We have previously stayed in BC for a week or so at a time but never took up legal residence there (acquiring social insurance card, health care, etc), so this is the first time we are immigrating there on a permanent basis. Any way to avoid such taxes, inasmuch as we have already paid taxes in the USA for the vehicle. (Our legal residence will be in BC) Any help will be appreciated.

Bob:

A simple GOOGLE search gets this Transport Canada website that deals specifically with the costs and regulations about your situation. READ it carefully and save it on your computer. You can download the forms and prepare them BEFORE you get to the border.

Go here;

Remember that the Government of Canada has MANY information websites to help you, as a new immigrant to Canada.

Hi Bob,

Hope you´re doing well. I also checked into this as we´re contemplating buying a new car in the U.S. (our landing occurred last October and we´re still partially living in the U.S.). From speaking with Canadian Customs at the border, they told us it´s not possible to avoid provincial and federal taxes/duties on future purchases after submission of "Goods to Follow" list at landing.

The reason they said was that many Canadians cross the border to purchase cars in the U.S. due to significant lower prices for identical vehicles. Apparently (from locals since we lived at a border town) without levying duties, there´s be a flood of Canadians purchasing new U.S. cars and bringing them back.

If you do find different information, I´d be very interested.

Hi Bob: We´re in the same situation as well, in that we bought a second car after landing but before moving up north. We knew that we´d have to pay the taxes, but we ended up getting a very good deal so it will still be worth it.

The one exception that I am aware of is if your new car is a replacement for one that you´d already declared; if for example, your declared car was totaled in an accident and you replaced it with one that had equal monetary value (this is the case with other items on the GTF list, at any rate, and I´d assume it would apply to a vehicle as well). That doesn´t sound like it´s the case, however. Other than that, I think we can all look forward to paying our taxes due. :)
