Subject: Longer visitor visa needed
My wife is coming up to Canada from the U.S within the next few months and we are looking to get her and my new born son on my Canadian medical insurance. In order to do that we need to have proof that she has permission to stay in Canada for a year or more by way of a visitors visa. We are not at this point going for a permanent resident visa as we will only be here for a year before moving back to States. I cannot find any information about applying for an extended visitors visa prior to travel, it would seem that they instead want you to apply for an extension once the 6 months stay is up. This would be no good for us because we need proof of a year long visa for Alberta Health Care coverage of her and my son. Can anybody help with any information, the gov of Canada website is terrible and the call centre just keeps directing us to it.
Thanks for any help

So what is your status in Alberta? That you left off your post. That would make the world of difference.

In my understanding she is a non PR nor a Canadian citizen correct?

If she says that she wants to enter Canada as a visitor for a period of a year to be able to use Alberta´s health care.... I must say that she will be refused of entry into Canada since she is violating the definition of a "visitor".

What is your status in Canada?
You may want to look some other options before she departs the US.

It probably would be easier to get a insurance from the US before coming to Canada then enter as a regular visitor and apply for an extention of her visitor status. (Get her to travel to Canada using a valid US Passport though).

all vistor visas are valid for six months only and if you want to stay more than 6 months then you have apply for an extension atleast 2 months before the expiration of visa. Your message is very confusing, you must be very clear when asking a question.

Roy,
I am a Canadian PR ( with Canadian Citizenship documents currently being processed) and we need a visa for her and my son to be here for a year.
Thanks

There is no such thing as a 1 year permit and to my understanding, no visitor is entitled Canadian healthcare. People married and living together, who have begun the sponsorship process still they don´t qualify for healthcare.

If she is in Canada on a work permit, I believe the option is there for health coverage.

The best option is to buy private insurance.
