and your question, a canadian can sponsor their spouse or congugal partner (gay or straight) providing they qualify under CIC application rules. check the cic website for criteria.

Marrying gay (in reply to: MARRYING A GAY CITIZEN) Hello
Marrying a same sex partner is not necessary for immigration purposes.
Application under Skilled Worker as primary applicant with your partner as a dependent is the perferred way. Be prepared to provide evidence that you both have lived together for a minimum of one year. A spousal / partner questionaire will be required following the IA or interview waiver.
